Read earlier dispatches&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/tag\/see-how-they-run\/\"><em>here<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>With ballots being mailed out to San Francisco voters on Oct. 7,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfelections.org\/tools\/election_data\/registration_by_party.php\">the 7.6 percent of them who registered as Republicans&nbsp;<\/a>might be surprised to see whom their fellow Republicans are telling them to vote for.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A rising Republican political group called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brionessociety.org\/\">San Francisco Briones Society<\/a>&nbsp;has put moderate-leaning Democratic candidate Daniel Lurie as their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brionessociety.org\/voterguide-nov-2024\">first choice<\/a>&nbsp;for the November election, ranking Mark Farrell as second and the incumbent Mayor London Breed as third. All three are registered Democrats.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mission-local-logo-300x300.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"Mission Local logo, with blue and orange lines on the shape of the Mission District\" class=\"wp-image-639216\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay informed on local elections \u2014 sign up for&nbsp;<strong>Mission Local&#8217;s free daily newsletter<\/strong>&nbsp;today!Sign up<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This came at the expense of Farrell, whose conservative campaign rhetoric has won over law-and-order voters and is backed by donors such as Thomas Coates \u2014 a rent-control foe who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sfethics.org\/ethics\/2023\/12\/campaign-finance-dashboards-november-5-2024.html\">gave<\/a>&nbsp;$500,000 to a political action committee supporting Farrell and another $250,000 to Farrell\u2019s ballot measure committee supporting Proposition D to reform city commissions and give more power to the mayor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d say it was pretty evenly split between people who wanted Mark Farrell first and Daniel Lurie first,\u201d Jay Donde, co-founder of the San Francisco Briones Society said about the decision made by a nine-person committee. \u201cThe one thing that Daniel has over all of the other candidates is that he can say that he was not in office and did not take part in the politics that led us to the current mess the city is in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Donde acknowledged that Farrell has experience in government but called it a \u201cdouble-edged sword.\u201d \u201cSometimes it\u2019s better to have new blood, new perspectives, fresh eyes in City Hall,\u201d he added, while emphasizing the two are both \u201cgood candidates\u201d that would be \u201ca significant improvement over the status quo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.broadstreetads.com\/assets\/0fb6043e-e51b-42b0-beec-1f37a9724413.jpg\" alt=\"Housing through 22nd\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a proud lifelong Democrat so it\u2019s not an endorsement I\u2019m seeking,\u201d Lurie said in a statement. \u201cBut my campaign has always been about bringing people into the fold, not pushing them away.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI welcome the support of every San Franciscan who is committed to restoring safety, ending homelessness and shutting down open air drug markets,\u201d Lurie said. \u201cThat\u2019s not partisan. It\u2019s common sense.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not the first time Lurie has received support from the Republican party or a Republican political group. In fact, Lurie and Farrell are the two top picks for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgop.org\/november\">San Francisco GOP<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 with Lurie\u2019s name placed ahead of Farrell\u2019s on a chart.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mrtipplessf.com\/jazzpassport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.broadstreetads.com\/assets\/8771081b-d1af-4344-9add-4d7a26c5a4aa.png\" alt=\"Passport\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ellen Lee Zhou, the only Republican candidate in the mayoral race, who wears a red MAGA-like hat while campaigning, has failed to make the cut for either the city\u2019s official Republican Party or the upstart Briones Society.
