ON WEDNESDAY, NEW<\/strong> evidence was filed in the federal case against former President Donald Trump over his efforts to reverse his 2020 election loss. In a massive brief, special counsel Jack Smith<\/a> offered a blow-by-blow of Trump\u2019s many calls, tweets, and meetings with key figures like Rudy Giuliani and attorney John Eastman. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 165-page document<\/a> is a page-turner, but it can be hard to follow. Many names are redacted and replaced with pseudonyms like \u201cCC1,\u201d short for \u201cCo-Conspirator 1,\u201d and \u201cP76,\u201d short for \u201cPerson 76.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re here to help. Below is the core cast of characters, plus some bit players who have received little attention until now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

CC1 \u2014 Rudy Giuliani<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The brief introduces Giuliani as a \u201cprivate attorney\u201d who was \u201cwilling to falsely claim victory and spread knowingly false claims of election fraud.\u201d Giuliani, who has since been disbarred<\/a> in New York and Washington, D.C., is also notably bad at dialing phone numbers, the brief notes, including a misdial to one Michigan lawmaker and two U.S. senators. The brief also cites one of Trump\u2019s tweets<\/a> naming Giuliani. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

CC2 \u2014 John Eastman<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The brief describes Eastman as a \u201cprofessor and lawyer\u201d who represented Trump in various capacities. Earlier this year, a California judge ruled Eastman should be disbarred, which he is currently appealing. Eastman is identifiable through references to certain cases in which he represented Trump, plus references to his appearance<\/a> on Steve Bannon\u2019s podcast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

CC3 \u2014 Sidney Powell<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The brief describes in detail Powell\u2019s obsession with bogus theories about voting machines, plus Trump\u2019s private views about her, including that Powell appeared \u201cunhinged\u201d at a press conference and that Tucker Carlson (\u201cP51\u201d in the brief) \u201ceviscerated\u201d her on Fox News<\/a>. Powell took a plea deal<\/a> last year in the Georgia election case and was sanctioned<\/a> by federal courts, but she kept<\/a> her Texas law license. The brief also cites one of Trump\u2019s tweets<\/a> naming Powell. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

CC4 \u2014 N\/A<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There is no CC4 in the latest brief, likely thanks to the Supreme Court\u2019s decision over the summer to grant Trump broad immunity for \u201cofficial\u201d acts. In the original indictment, Co-Conspirator 4 referred<\/a> to Jeffrey Clark, a former Justice Department attorney<\/a> who is currently facing disciplinary charges and is indicted along with Trump in Georgia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

CC5 \u2014 Ken Chesebro<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The brief describes Chesebro as \u201can attorney who volunteered to assist\u201d the Trump campaign \u201cin lawsuits challenging the election in Wisconsin.\u201d He\u2019s identifiable based on the brief\u2019s description of memos he drafted<\/a> that laid the foundation for the fake elector strategy. Chesebro took a plea deal<\/a> in the Georgia case last year and faces additional charges<\/a> in Wisconsin. The brief emphasizes that on January 6, Chesebro \u201cmarched with the crowd to the Capitol\u201d and \u201cbreached the restricted area surrounding the building.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CC6 \u2014 Boris Epshteyn<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The brief describes Epshteyn as a \u201cprivate political operative\u201d who communicated extensively with Giuliani and Eastman, including in texts<\/a> that have been partially published. Like Giuliani and Eastman, Epshteyn can also be identified based on an appearance on Bannon\u2019s podcast. The evening of January 6, he tracked down contact information for certain members of Congress that Trump directed Giuliani to call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brief <\/strong>describes <\/strong>Bannon as \u201ca private political advisor who had worked for the defendant\u2019s 2016 presidential campaign,\u201d and \u201cwho maintained a podcast that disseminated [Trump\u2019s] false fraud claims.\u201d References to certain podcast episode dates \u2014 including an infamous \u201cclimactic battle\u201d quip<\/a> \u2014 confirm Bannon\u2019s identity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brief describes Clark as Trump\u2019s deputy campaign manager. Clark is identifiable via snippets from an email in which he wrote that the fake electors scheme had \u201cmorphed\u201d into a \u201ccrazy play.\u201d The Arizona fake electors indictment<\/a>, which also names Clark, attributes this email to him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The <\/strong>brief itself does not include identifying information for this key person, who \u2014 despite not having a \u201cCC\u201d moniker \u2014 is described as \u201ca Campaign employee, agent, and co-conspirator.\u201d Multiple<\/a> outlets reported<\/a> this is Mike Roman<\/a>, who is currently facing charges in Arizona and Wisconsin. The brief alleges he \u201csought to create chaos\u201d at polling places after the election, urging a colleague, \u201cMake them riot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
