<\/td>Today was indigenous peoples day, but don\u2019t expect the press to cover how indigenous communities are under attack from the Amazon to Gaza

Indigenous Peoples Day was first officially celebrated three years ago, and was commemorated to support awareness about the history, needs,\u00a0contributions<\/a>, and continuing challenges of indigenous communities. Yet, as the world stands by watching a genocide unfold targeting the indigenous peoples of Palestine, editors of U.S. news organizations found better things to cover, like\u00a0opinions and predictions<\/a>\u00a0about the upcoming election shared by a former president whose legacy includes the corporate co-optation of the Democratic Party.

To their credit, outlets including\u00a0USA Today<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0NPR<\/a>\u00a0covered Indigenous Peoples Day, while conveniently omitting any reference to how the day relates to other headlines about, for instance, Israel\u2019s\u00a0latest attack on civilian targets<\/a>.

Gaza is not the only part of the world where indigenous people are under attack today. Across the Amazon,\u00a0illegal loggers are encroaching<\/a>\u00a0on the territory of indigenous peoples in the service of industries including ranching and mining, often driving\u00a0armed conflict<\/a>. One of my next posts will review an important documentary film depicting indigenous resistance to this illegal logging in Brazil.\u00a0

Of course, the United States has an\u00a0especially shameful history<\/a>\u00a0of indigenous genocide. It was\u00a0so severe<\/a>\u00a0that the Nazis found it too brutal to emulate, yet it remains largely overlooked in discussions of contemporary genocides unfolding with support from Washington.
