Organizers from the International Indian Treaty Council say that action \u201csparked the National and International Indigenous Peoples movement for rights and justice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/dancers-844x640.jpg?resize=780%2C591&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"A dancer in traditional attire performs at an outdoor event, with a crowd watching in the background.\" class=\"wp-image-658835\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Annual sunrise gathering for Indigenous Peoples\u2019 day on Alcatraz Island on Oct. 14, 2024. Indigenous leaders highlighted their fight against climate change and led collective prayers. The workers,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2024\/05\/alcatraz-ferry-workers-go-on-strike-but-service-continues\/\">who are on strike<\/a>, were permitted to provide service to the island on Monday, when almost 200 free tickets were provided to community members by the organization Indigenous Justice. One employee added that they hoped to provide free ferry tickets to all indigenous people in the future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sunrise6-427x640.jpg?resize=427%2C640&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"A person in a colorful jacket and hat sits on the ground, holding a child wrapped in blankets. Photo by Abigail Van Neely.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ferries carrying members of the public began departing just after 4 a.m. Despite the early hour, the boats buzzed with chatter. From one deck, someone played music from a speaker. Though some attendees traveled from as far away as British Columbia, many came from San Francisco, saying they were there to support the indigenous \u201cland back\u201d efforts. \u201cWe should re-occupy it,\u201d one said as their ferry approached the island.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adlahchisti.com\/policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.broadstreetads.com\/assets\/0a5564b2-81a7-4777-9670-8d9b7d60a640.png\" alt=\"Adlah 1 \"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Many had personal ties to native tribes, like Brandon Smith, who runs a fencing school in North Beach and is connected to the Yoeme tribe in Arizona. It was his first time visiting Alcatraz.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/dancer3-726x640.jpeg?resize=726%2C640&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"A group of people gather outdoors near a large fire, with some wearing traditional attire and others watching. Photo by Abigail Van Neely.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It had been a particularly emotional week leading up to this year\u2019s gathering, Gali said; the council had just lost two elders. But, on this morning, the positive warmth Gali said she felt was palpable as other community members approached to embrace her from the audience. Photo by Abigail Van Neely.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlcatraz represents both a site of pain where Indigenous Peoples were imprisoned for their resistance to colonization, and a place where we stood up together for our rights and survival.\u201d a spokesperson from the council wrote in a statement. \u201cThis annual gathering honors those resistors and reminds us that our fight for justice is far from over.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.roberto4sf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.broadstreetads.com\/assets\/1d9052bd-6f2a-41ca-b000-e67997b5b6ff.png\" alt=\"Roberto Hernandez Campaign\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Before European settlers arrived in California, local tribes had varying relationships with the island. But once the U.S. expanded into California, Alcatraz island became a military base where indigenous people were incarcerated,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DA_PBjevV5X\/?img_index=1\">according to<\/a>&nbsp;the Sogorea Te\u2019 Land Trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/dancer6-930x620.jpeg?resize=780%2C520&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"A group of people in traditional costumes perform in front of a seated audience outdoors.\" class=\"wp-image-658831\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Annual sunrise gathering for Indigenous Peoples\u2019 day on Alcatraz Island on Oct. 14, 2024. Photo by Abigail Van Neely.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As attendees waited to board boats leaving the island for San Francisco, Gali announced that the microphone was now open to anyone who wanted to \u201cshare a song\u201d or \u201ctalk about their peoples\u2019 struggles.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, tourists visiting Alcatraz began to arrive.
