This week: Aaron Peskin. Read earlier dispatches&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/tag\/see-how-they-run\/\"><em>here<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Dolores Huerta, the legendary labor organizer who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2024\/06\/dolores-huerta-ufw-co-founder-from-girl-scout-to-activist\/\">co-founded the United Farm Workers with Cesar Chavez<\/a>, has endorsed Board of Supervisors\u2019 president Aaron Peskin in San Francisco\u2019s mayoral race. In late September,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2024\/09\/see-how-they-run-dolores-huerta-endorses-mayor-london-breed\/\">Huerta endorsed Mayor London Breed for re-election<\/a>, making this a co-endorsement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mission-local-logo-300x300.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"Mission Local logo, with blue and orange lines on the shape of the Mission District\" class=\"wp-image-639216\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay informed on local elections \u2014 sign up for&nbsp;<strong>Mission Local&#8217;s free daily newsletter<\/strong>&nbsp;today!Sign up<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Huerta endorsed Breed, she specifically cited her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. Huerta\u2019s support of Peskin is more focused on labor rights and housing affordability. \u201cAaron Peskin is a fighter for workers and families \u2014 he has proven that over and over,\u201d wrote Huerta, in a statement. \u201cI encourage everyone to vote for Aaron Peskin for mayor if you want an effective, healthy, and affordable city that supports its families, renters, and workers fighting for a better future! Si se puede!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI grew up in a household where, as a young kid, we didn\u2019t eat table grapes because of the UFW,\u201d said Peskin today. \u201cCesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers movement and Dolores Huerta were part of my early childhood kitchen table learning.\u201d Peskin and Huerta have met several times over the years, in passing, says Peskin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, the National Union of Healthcare Workers, which represents workers at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/tag\/mission-neighborhood-health-center\/\">Mission Neighborhood Health Center<\/a>&nbsp;and other healthcare facilities across the city, reached out to Huerta and introduced the two more formally. \u201cShe and I traded calls and text messages, and then she announced to me, day before yesterday, that she was honored to endorse me,\u201d Peskin said. \u201cI am honored and delighted, and it\u2019s one of the biggest endorsements I\u2019ve ever gotten. I\u2019m very proud.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stephentorressf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.broadstreetads.com\/assets\/45e3815c-8b9e-4920-bc6f-61be90af7c49.jpg\" alt=\"Torres precampaign\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The introduction to Huerta was just the latest move by the National Union of Healthcare Workers bolstering Peskin\u2019s campaign: They&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2024\/10\/follow-the-money-labor-bets-big-on-peskin-spends-against-farrell\/\">gave a pro-Peskin PAC $75,000<\/a>&nbsp;on Oct. 11, and recently rescinded their No. 2 endorsement of Peskin\u2019s opponent, Ahsha Safa\u00ed, because&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2024\/10\/ahsha-safai-mark-farrell-alliance-why\/\">Safa\u00ed made an alliance with Mark Farrell<\/a>. Peskin, the union said, was \u201cthe best candidate by far when it comes to delivering for San Francisco workers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Mission in particular, Huerta is a prized endorsement. When the Breed campaign announced Huerta\u2019s endorsement, Tracy Gallardo, a founder of the<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2020\/07\/the-latino-task-force-emerges-to-take-on-covid-19\/\">&nbsp;Latino Task Force<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2024\/09\/see-how-they-run-dolores-huerta-endorses-mayor-london-breed\/\">described it to&nbsp;<em>Mission Local<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;as an ace in the hole. \u201cI\u2019ve worked on other campaigns where the minute [Huerta] dropped an endorsement, every Latino caller, that is what we used. Oh Dolores Huerta? Si, c\u00f3mo que claro que si. Who do you want me to vote for? Okay.\u2019 You say Dolores Huerta, you slap that on a flier and you put that out, you got the vote.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Huerta has also weighed in against Breed\u2019s pick for district attorney: She has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C__0ZvZSHoH\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\">endorsed Ryan Khohasteh<\/a>, a former prosecutor under District Attorney Brooke Jenkins\u2019 predecessor, Chesa Boudin, who is running against Jenkins on a platform of reform.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.broadstreetads.com\/assets\/0fb6043e-e51b-42b0-beec-1f37a9724413.jpg\" alt=\"Housing through 22nd\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Rouppet, the co-president of the San Francisco Latinx Democratic Club, criticized Huerta\u2019s endorsement of Breed (though not Huerta) on the grounds that Breed has refused to meet with the group \u2014 the only Latino Democratic club in San Francisco \u2014 or hear its concerns about policing, the chaotic street-vending situation along Mission Street, and displacement. Rouppet said that he was delighted to hear of Huerta\u2019s endorsement of Peskin,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sflatinodemocrats.com\/november_5_2024\">who the club has endorsed for mayor<\/a>. \u201cDolores Huerta is an icon in our community,\u201d Rouppet continued. \u201cThis endorsement supports tenants. It supports our most vulnerable populations in San Francisco, it supports our efforts to organize at the community level for the voices who aren\u2019t at the discussion table.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/author\/smith\/\">H.R.
