The decision came days after the&nbsp;<em>Los Angeles Times&nbsp;<\/em>owner, the billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong, also reportedly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/10\/22\/2024\/los-angeles-times-wont-endorse-for-president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blocked<\/a>&nbsp;a planned endorsement of Harris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Washington Post Guild, a union, condemned Bezos&#8217; decision in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PostGuild\/status\/1849868082900250885\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>&nbsp;on social media, arguing that it was an abdication of responsibility and suggesting that &#8220;management interfered with our members in editorial.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karen Attiah, a&nbsp;<em>Post<\/em>&nbsp;columnist,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@karenattiah\/post\/DBjrclfy8aZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called<\/a>&nbsp;the decision an &#8220;an absolute stab in the back,&#8221; writing on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What an insult to those of us who have literally put our careers and lives on the line to call out threats to human rights and democracy,&#8221; she wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Martin &#8220;Marty&#8221; Baron, a former executive editor at the&nbsp;<em>Post<\/em>&nbsp;who was lauded for his leadership of the paper from 2012 to 2021, also denounced the decision not to endorse a presidential candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is cowardice, with democracy as its casualty.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>&nbsp;will see this as an invitation to further intimidate owner Jeff Bezos (and others),&#8221; he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PostBaron\/status\/1849847940761657353\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;on social media. &#8220;Disturbing spinelessness at an institution famed for courage.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>https:\/\/x.com\/PostBaron\/status\/1849847940761657353?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1849847940761657353%7Ctwgr%5E18552d8d80b6cf62b4beaa6b34e688fad024713f%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fwashington-post-endorsement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>Post<\/em>&nbsp;has endorsed the Democratic nominee for president in every race since 1976, aside from 1988, when it made no endorsement. The&nbsp;<em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>&nbsp;didn&#8217;t issue endorsements for decades but has endorsed the Democrat in each of the past four presidential elections, starting in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lewis said the&nbsp;<em>Post<\/em>&nbsp;would no longer make presidential endorsements and emphasized its commitment to independent, nonpartisan news. He cited editorial board decisions not to endorse in 1960 and 1972, which gave similar rationales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lewis was previously the publisher at&nbsp;<em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>, which is owned by right-wing billionaire&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/rupert-murdoch\">Rupert Murdoch<\/a>. Lewis&#8217; tenure at the&nbsp;<em>Post<\/em>, which began last year, has been plagued by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2024\/06\/07\/will-lewis-washington-post-00162341\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">controversy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reasons for Bezos&#8217; reported intervention to stop a planned Harris endorsement are not clear, but he has told the paper&#8217;s leaders that he would like them to seek out more conservative readers and add more conservative opinion columnists,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/25\/business\/media\/washington-post-presidential-endorsement.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a><em>The New York Times.<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/25\/business\/media\/washington-post-presidential-endorsement.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some observers have suggested that Bezos, the founder of Amazon, and Soon-Shiong, a biotech mogul, are afraid to antagonize Trump for fear he could retaliate against their businesses when in office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The most serious allegation&#8230; is that Soon-Shiong and Bezos are trying to hedge their bets out of fear that their business interests could be harmed during a second Trump presidency,&#8221;&nbsp;<em>Columbia Journalism Review<\/em>&#8216;s Sewall Chan, who has worked at both the&nbsp;<em>Post<\/em>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/political_press\/the-washington-post-opinion-editor-approved-a-harris-endorsement-a-week-later-the-papers-publisher-killed-it.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Soon-Shiong, who made his fortune as a biopharmaceutical innovator, is working on new drugs that would presumably require FDA approval,&#8221; Chan continued. &#8220;Amazon faces an antitrust lawsuit, brought last year by the Biden administration, that will take years to litigate or settle.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert Kagan, a neoconservative columnist and editor at large at the&nbsp;<em>Post<\/em>, resigned in protest on Friday,&nbsp;<em>Semafor<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/10\/25\/2024\/editor-resign-subscribers-cancel-as-washington-post-non-endorsement-prompts-crisis-at-bezos-paper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, while suggesting there may be further resignations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;People are shocked, furious, surprised,&#8221; an unnamed editorial board member told&nbsp;<em>Semafor<\/em>&nbsp;about the endorsement decision. &#8220;If you don&#8217;t have the balls to own a newspaper, don&#8217;t.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other major newspapers have endorsed Harris,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/opinion\/editorials\/a\/endorsement-president-kamala-harris-democracy-20241025.html?id=W6IVlMuv9SUNG&amp;utm_source=social&amp;utm_campaign=gift_link&amp;utm_medium=referral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including<\/a><em>The Philadelphia Inquirer<\/em>&nbsp;on Friday\u2014with the reminder that &#8220;the road to the White House may well run through Pennsylvania and every vote matters.&#8221; Will Bunch, a columnist at the paper,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Will_Bunch\/status\/1849855989723562304\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;on social media that &#8220;unlike some other news organizations, we will not be silenced, not when everything is on the line for democracy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0endorsed Harris on September 30,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/30\/opinion\/editorials\/kamala-harris-2024.html\" target=\"_blank\">calling<\/a>\u00a0Trump &#8220;morally unfit&#8221; and &#8220;temperamentally unfit&#8221; for office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
