Mayor London Breed held a re-election rally before a modest crowd Saturday\u2014and not long after, some 400 people showed up in the Panhandle in a final get-out-the-vote push from Sup. Aaron Peskin and other progressive candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Peskin noted the contrast: The attendees at the Breed rally were \u201cvoluntolds, not volunteers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the opposite is true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yes: The billionaires right now are fighting over which neo-liberal candidate they want to see in Room 200, and the progressives seem solidly behind Peskin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Instagram video: https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DBo-l5tJ-2V\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n Sup. Dean Preston, who is in a tight race for re-election (and facing a torrent of Big Tech and real estate money) noted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe narrative funded by a bunch of billionaires is that somehow this city was transformed overnight into a place where people hate tenants and artists and only want billionaires to live here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Sup. Connie Chan, who is also facing a big-money challenge, spoke about issues driving here campaign: \u201cOne job is enough,\u201d she said. \u201cSick people need treatment, not jail. \u2026 the people in Room 200 want to divide us and gaslight us every day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Peskin brought up the issue that clearly united everyone in the park: Rent control. Peskin, Chan, and Preston are all pushing efforts to expand rent control to most of the existing units in the city; Breed signed Peskin\u2019s bill, that would take effect if Prop. 33 passes, but she\u2019s never been a big promoter of expanded rent control.
