The Zoox vehicles are designed specifically for self-driving.

The unusual looking vehicles resemble pill capsules with wheels, and can drive in either direction since they lack a steering wheel or space for a driver. For now, only Zoox employees can take test rides in them, although the company plans to expand to public rides next year.

Social media users began posting videos of the vehicles navigating SoMa streets on social media during the past few days. Those are test and mapping vehicles, however, and the company has said all Zoox rides will be offered in its more futuristic-looking vehicles.

The company’s purpose-built vehicles had previously been offering rides to employees at the Zoox Foster City campus.

“Now that we’ve passed all critical safety measures, we are excited to begin testing our robotaxi in this wonderful city,” said Zoox CEO Aicha Evans in the blog post.

Reach Chase DiFeliciantonio: chase.difeliciantonio@sfchronicle.com; X: @ChaseDiFelice

Nov 11, 2024

Chase DiFeliciantonio

REPORTER

Chase DiFeliciantonio is a reporter at the San Francisco Chronicle where he covers tech and how AI is changing the city and the region.
