Of the six resolutions introduced by Senator Sanders, only three were brought to a vote yesterday.

The vote results were as follows:

S.J.Res 111 18 in favor, 79 against (120mm Tank Cartridges)

S.J.Res 113 19 in favor, 78 against (high explosive mortar rounds)

S.J.Res 115 17 in favor, 80 against (JDAM)

It’s easy to feel disappointed in these results, but it is important to keep in mind that this was the first time EVER that the Senate even had a vote to block U.S. weapons sales to Israel. Over ⅓ of all Senate Democrats voted to oppose the sales. We flooded the phone lines, inboxes and hallways of our Senators so much so that President Biden felt the need to personally lobby and campaign against the vote (on his birthday!). This is a win for activists who have been working for years to restrict and condition military aid to Israel. This is monumental, and it sets a benchmark from where we can move forward.

So What’s Next?

Let’s continue to build our political power as we gear up for the fights ahead of us.

H.R. 9495 has been voted and passed in the House (219 in favor, 184 against) and will be heading to the senate. Please direct another round of emails and phone calls to your senators to stop this dangerous bill, which would allow arbitrary denial of tax-exempt status to disfavored nonprofit corporations. It is clearly aimed at Palestine supporting groups for starters, but will affect a much larger range of targets under an administration determined to undermine progressive NGOs.

Good news! Thanks to our advocacy and frequent meetings with his staffers, Congressmember Adam Schiff shifted his position this morning and voted NO on HR 9495. Please call his office directly at 202-225-4175 (DC office) and 818-450-2900 (Burbank office) to THANK HIM for voting No on HR 9495. In an interesting turn of events, he might be sworn in as our next Senator in the next week or so (replacing Senator Butler) so he might be one of the Senators that votes on HR 9495 when it comes to the Senate for a vote so it’s all the more important that we thank him now and ask him to vote No in the Senate as well if he is sworn in before the vote.

H.R. 1449 has been voted on and passed in the House (388 in favor, 21 against) and is headed to the Senate. The bill adopts the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) redefinition of antisemitism to incorrectly equate criticism of Israel with antisemitism. Stay tuned for more on this.

H.R. 6090 Antisemitism Awareness Act has passed the House in May, further conflating criticism of Israel and zionism with antisemitism. Stay tuned for more information.

Join us for a national Debrief and Restrategizing Session, Tuesday November 26th at 4-5:30 pm PST.
