Photo by Yujie Zhou, Dec. 23, 2024.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Chestnut-backed chickadees, yellow warblers and other feathered birds have landed this winter on otherwise-unassuming green utility boxes along South Van Ness Avenue and Bryant Street in the Mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These 20 feathered friends are the creation of Claudio Talavera-Ball\u00f3n, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2016\/04\/the-women-who-feed-the-migrants-a-mission-painters-view\/\">Mission-based Peruvian painter<\/a>&nbsp;sponsored by the nonprofit Paint the Void to paint 10 Mission utility boxes, part of a project to remake 250 utility boxes across San Francisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s an effort to color the utility boxes that store infrastructure for nearby traffic lights across the city. Elsewhere, dozens of artists have covered the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/sf-culture\/article\/sf-sidewalks-more-colorful-murals-19841587.php\">municipal green<\/a>\u201d boxes with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DDNSYNiS6aY\/\">pandas<\/a>, a girl on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DDbE_8Lpq5i\/?img_index=1\">swing<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DBmpIKGTZTY\/?img_index=1\">a naughty astronaut<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talavera-Ball\u00f3n\u2019s flock, all Bay Area species, can be seen at almost every intersection on South Van Ness between 14th and 22nd streets. In the last two months, they\u2019ve become fixtures of the Mission.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mission-local-logo-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mission Local logo, with blue and orange lines on the shape of the Mission District\" class=\"wp-image-639216\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Want the latest on the Mission and San Francisco? When he started working on the tiny chestnut-backed chickadee at Bryant and 17th streets, Talavera-Ball\u00f3n said, \u201cI started seeing a lot of [chestnut-backed chickadees] in the Mission.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He chose \u201cthe most colorful\u201d birds to depict. It took him 10 eight-hour days to finish the renderings \u2014 sometimes longer, if he needed to erase and redraw the eye. The latter, he said, is the key to bringing a bird to life. \u201cIf you see the eyes of the bird, the birds are watching you,\u201d said Talavera-Ball\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-datawrapper wp-block-embed-datawrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/9XCbx\/1\/#?secret=nR9ICdgDxL\" data-secret=\"nR9ICdgDxL\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"633\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The yellow warbler at the corner of South Van Ness and 22nd is a bird with yellow and black stripes that migrates between California and South America. When they were in town, they congregated in the large pomelo tree in Talavera-Ball\u00f3n\u2019s backyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, they are gone. \u201cSomebody cut the tree,\u201d he explained. Afterwards, the birds, which are important predators of pests, never returned to his backyard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEverything is in concern of extinction,\u201d said Talavera-Ball\u00f3n, who chose birds as his subject partly to raise awareness about the climate, pollution and animals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elixirsf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.broadstreetads.com\/assets\/c16c5deb-5adf-4e35-84fc-eaafacc0b743.png\" alt=\"Elixir\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, \u201ceverybody likes birds,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turns out he was right; the 20 birds got zero bad reviews, a rarity in San Francisco as far as anything goes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He had an audience of onlookers while he painted. He remembered three little boys of nearly identical faces and different ages who watched him with their mouths open and their heads tilted to the side&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When he worked on the utility box at South Van Ness and 14th, a young lady hugged him, cried like a child and thanked him over and over, said Talavera-Ball\u00f3n. She said the bird \u2014 either a black phoebe or a western wood pewee \u2014 reminded her of her father, and she said, \u201cYou don\u2019t know what the bird means to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/biritemarket.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.broadstreetads.com\/assets\/e7c03736-d406-4c62-a1e3-8fe68cf9485d.png\" alt=\"Dec23\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is my payment,\u201d said Talavera-Ball\u00f3n who, like other artists, receives&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/sf-culture\/article\/sf-sidewalks-more-colorful-murals-19841587.php\">$800<\/a>&nbsp;per utility box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talavera-Ball\u00f3n, 50, has been an artist since childhood, when his mom constantly encouraged him to paint. He sometimes had to \u201cchoose between [drawing] materials and food;\u201d he always chose the former. \u201cEverybody can bring me food, but not everybody can bring me a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alizarin_crimson_(color)\">crimson alizarin<\/a>,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s also the creator of large-scale mural projects at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.talavera-ballon.com\/murals\">25th and Mission streets<\/a>, the Salesforce Transit Center, and others in Redwood City and Oaxaca, Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The utility-box murals were intended to deter taggers. Two months into the completion, however, many of Talavera-Ball\u00f3n\u2019s birds have already been defaced with graffiti.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/paxtongate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.broadstreetads.com\/assets\/c7f92e0f-a72b-4fba-881a-de745e793339.jpg\" alt=\"Adv #4\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, he finds joy in painting them: \u201cGive me all the boxes in the Mission.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_0856-918x640.jpg\" alt=\"Urban street corner with pedestrians crossing and a church in the background.
