The background features green grass and trees.\"> by\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/author\/yujie_zhou\/\">YUJIE ZHOU<\/a><\/strong> JANUARY 22, 2025 (MissionLocal.org)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Screenshot-2025-01-22-at-7.06.43%E2%80%AFPM-1200x747.png\" alt=\"Logo featuring a stylized illustration of a woman with the text &quot;Rose Pak Democratic Club&quot; and Chinese characters below, outlined with a blue circular border.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rose Pak Democratic Club, one of the city\u2019s most prominent progressive Asian political organizations, today&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/RPDC-Letter_Speech.pdf\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;that it has decided not to recharter with the San Francisco Democratic Party, saying the Democratic brand has become toxic to local Asian voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter a resounding defeat in November, it is abundantly clear that the Democratic Party cannot continue with business as usual,\u201d wrote the Rose Pak club\u2019s president Jeremy Lee, vice-president Alvin Lee and secretary\/treasurer Joy Zhan&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/RPDC-Letter_Speech.pdf\">in an open letter<\/a>&nbsp;addressed to Nancy Tung, the chair of the San Francisco Democratic Party.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, the letter continued, during the club\u2019s voter engagement work with monolingual Chinese seniors, members noticed immediate distrust of Democrat-endorsed candidates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Donald Trump gained significant ground with the same voters by \u201cspeaking to fears around public safety, economic stability, stagnant wages, and the rising cost of living \u2014 issues where the Democratic Party has fallen short.\u201d Though support for Trump in San Francisco was minimal,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/election\/article\/trump-election-sf-california-19894648.php\">Asian neighborhoods<\/a>&nbsp;were some of the most supportive in the city.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mission-local-logo-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mission Local logo, with blue and orange lines on the shape of the Mission District\" class=\"wp-image-639216\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Want the latest on the Mission and San Francisco? Moving forward, the club will be known as the Rose Pak Asian American Club.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from the name change, the club\u2019s mission will remain the same, said Lee. The club will work to improve language access and support low-income seniors, SRO families, and new immigrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lack of Democratic Party affiliation will, said Lee, hopefully help the club\u2019s work supporting local candidates and issues. \u201cThrough interacting with voters, we find that people aren\u2019t as ingrained in their camps as we think they are,\u201d said Lee.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, in his personal capacity working on Chyanne Chen\u2019s campaign for District 11 supervisor last year, he came across voters who were enthusiastic Trump supporters, or enthusiastic supporters of MAGA Republican mayoral candidate Ellen Lee Zhou, but also enthusiastic Chen supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn a policy level, on an ideological level, all these individuals are vastly different,\u201d said Lee. \u201cBut they\u2019ve been able to speak to voters of our immigrant communities and resonate with them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jenniferrosdail.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.broadstreetads.com\/assets\/5608e33b-2c09-471e-a539-a5fb014bd56e.gif\" alt=\"Jennifer SR\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Club members also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/SFDCCC-Letter-2024.07.10.pdf\">complained<\/a>&nbsp;that the local Democratic Party did nothing after District 9 supervisorial hopeful Trevor Chandler used publicly accessible Rose Pak Democratic Club material to denigrate eventual winner Jackie Fielder, one of the club\u2019s endorsed candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of the club will remain Democrats, despite the decision. \u201cI personally still think a lot of our Democratic Party policies very much benefit the Asian American community,\u201d said Zhan, the club\u2019s secretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The club is named after the late Rose Pak, a longtime power broker and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/A-gravely-ill-Rose-Pak-on-life-death-and-her-6456189.php\">a tireless force in city politics<\/a>.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In November\u2019s election, the club&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosepakdemclub.org\/endorsements\">endorsed<\/a>&nbsp;a completely different set of candidates than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfdemocrats.org\/voting\/endorsements\/2024\/nov5general\">the local Democratic Party<\/a>.&nbsp;Although all were Democrats, District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar was the only overlap.
