Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) speaks at a rally in The Bronx, New York on June 22, 2024 in New York City.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Photo: Steven Ferdman\/GC Images)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;One of the things that we need to do is to talk to people directly,&#8221; said the congresswoman. &#8220;There need to be Democrats who walk the walk and talk the talk.&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/julia-conley\">JULIA CONLEY<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jan 24, 2025 (CommonDreams.org)<a href=\"https:\/\/giving.commondreams.org\/-\/XKQWGZVR\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Democratic lawmakers grappled with the reality of President Donald Trump&#8217;s second term this week, U.S. Rep.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez\">Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/a>&nbsp;on Thursday urged the party to see the president&#8217;s devotion to billionaires and corporations\u2014after he campaigned as a champion for the forgotten working class\u2014as an opportunity to make clear that Democrats, not Republicans, will fight for the interests of &#8220;everyday people.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, the New York Democratic congresswoman said in an interview with Jon Stewart on his podcast, &#8220;The Weekly Show,&#8221; the party must abandon its own allegiances to the billionaire class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump, his close ties with tech billionaires like Tesla founder&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/musk-salute-trump-inauguration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elon Musk<\/a>, his plans to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-tax-cuts-ten-corporations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">extend<\/a>&nbsp;the 2017 tax cuts that primarily benefited the wealthy, and his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-oil-industry-donations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">promises<\/a>&nbsp;of deregulation to oil executives ahead of the election all highlight &#8220;ways that we can fight back,&#8221; said Ocasio-Cortez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;One of the things that we need to do is to talk to people directly,&#8221; said the congresswoman. &#8220;There need to be Democrats who walk the walk and talk the talk. There is an insane amount of hypocrisy, and the hypocrisy is what gets exploited [by Republicans].&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ocasio-Cortez pointed to the example of &#8220;insider trading&#8221; by lawmakers, with members of Congress who receive briefings on the defense industry, pharmaceuticals, and other businesses able to use information not available to the public to predict future stock prices. As&nbsp;<em>Common Dreams<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/congress-defense-stock-trading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;in December, dozens of members of Congress bought or sold up to $113 million worth of shares in Pentagon contractors last year, with three Democrats\u2014Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.), Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), and Suzan Delbene (D-Wash.)\u2014trading the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pelosi, the former House speaker, is among the lawmakers who have vehemently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/12\/15\/are-they-trying-lose-critics-ask-after-pelosi-defends-stock-trading-lawmakers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defended<\/a>&nbsp;stock trading by lawmakers, while Ocasio-Cortez has frequently spoken out against the practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;People think that everyday people are stupid,&#8221; Ocasio-Cortez&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/weeklyshowpod\/status\/1882806816876454199\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;Stewart on Thursday. &#8220;Do you really think that people don&#8217;t see this shit? &#8230;And then we&#8217;re supposed to act like money only corrupts Republicans? Give me a fucking break.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/weeklyshowpod\/status\/1882806816876454199?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1882806816876454199%7Ctwgr%5E8d70c045acc428b9e9fd2a162362e32ec0330069%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Faoc-democrat\">https:\/\/x.com\/weeklyshowpod\/status\/1882806816876454199?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1882806816876454199%7Ctwgr%5E8d70c045acc428b9e9fd2a162362e32ec0330069%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Faoc-democrat<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump won the support of working class people across the country,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/11\/14\/nx-s1-5183060\/why-working-class-voters-have-been-shifting-toward-the-republican-party\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increasing<\/a>&nbsp;his support among voters who earn less than $100,000 per year despite the fact, as Ocasio-Cortez said, &#8220;that he has a Supreme Court that guts labor rights, that [Republicans] are overwhelmingly opposed to raising a minimum wage, that they are really gutting the civil rights around working people and organizing.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wealthier voters<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/trump-harris-demographics-analysis-1.7377364\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;shifted&nbsp;<\/a>toward the Democratic Party in the election, supporting Democratic candidate former Vice President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/kamala-harris\">Kamala Harris<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To respond to Trump&#8217;s victory, Ocasio-Cortez said, &#8220;we need to be a party of brawlers for the working class.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve been chasing this affluent group and making all of these little concessions and hoping that working people don&#8217;t notice,&#8221; the push to expand Medicare coverage to every American; and a supporter of tuition-free public college, which was offered to students across the U.S. until at least the 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her interview with Stewart came as&nbsp;<em>Semafor<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/01\/23\/2025\/give-us-a-little-time-democrats-search-for-a-guiding-principle-against-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;that Democratic leaders are &#8220;wrestling with how much resistance to mount to Trump&#8217;s Cabinet.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We&#8217;re obviously in a bit of disarray,&#8221; one Democratic senator told the outlet. &#8220;I don&#8217;t think people are really completely sure about what lesson is to be learned in this election.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesse Brenneman, an editor for the podcast &#8220;Know Your Enemy,&#8221; the congresswoman&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/rhcm123\/status\/1882277348197953549\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;supporters: &#8220;You&#8217;re getting ripped off.
