We recognize your contributions to our city. And we stand with you. You belong here,\u201d said Mayor Daniel Lurie, who spoke briefly at the conference. He encouraged residents to visit&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/immigrants.sf.gov\/\">immigrants.sf.gov<\/a>&nbsp;to find support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lurie did not make any direct comment about the Trump administration. At today\u2019s Board of Supervisors meeting,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/3_CDSS_Center_for_Immigrant_Protection_reso_MOHCD_final.docx.pdf\">mayoral legislation setting aside $250,000 to cover legal services for LGBTQ+ immigrants<\/a>&nbsp;is slated for introduction. The funds will ostensibly go mainly toward supporting trans immigrants who are seeking asylum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rally was organized by SEIU Local 87, which represents many service and janitorial workers, following an incident involving ICE agents targeting janitorial workers in a downtown office building on Friday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mission-local-logo-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mission Local logo, with blue and orange lines on the shape of the Mission District\" class=\"wp-image-639216\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Want the latest on the Mission and San Francisco? Sign up for our&nbsp;<strong>free daily newsletter<\/strong>&nbsp;below.Sign up<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virtually every branch of city government was represented in Tuesday\u2019s rally, and speakers included every member of the Board of Supervisors, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, Public Defender Mano Raju, Police Chief Bill Scott and City Attorney David Chiu, many of whom are immigrants, or were born to immigrant parents. Many union representatives were also present, including SEIU president April Verrett, who flew in from Washington, D.C., to attend the event.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/8D06D49C-361C-4E0F-B88D-1FB77AEDF6EC.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-712286\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">City Attorney David Chiu spoke at Tuesday\u2019s rally. Photo by Kelly Waldron.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Chiu, whose office was one of the first to file a lawsuit against Trump\u2019s executive order to end birthright citizenship, insisted that the city\u2019s sanctuary policy is legal. \u201cNothing in our local law interferes or impedes federal immigration enforcement,\u201d said Chiu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur city is not encouraging our people to impede lawful immigrant immigration actions. Our policy simply says you cannot deputize local law enforcement as ICE agents,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/88AFC85C-DE23-463B-A28D-E7627B3AAFF6-930x620.jpeg\" alt=\"People standing outside a building hold a colorful banner with &quot;SOMOS LA RESISTENCIA&quot; and illustrations of faces and messages opposing deportation and ICE.\" class=\"wp-image-712284\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>President Trump has vowed to conduct mass deportations, among other measures targeting immigrant communities, including halting refugee admissions. Talk of ICE raids has widely circulated in the city, in some cases referring to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/01\/sfpd-confirms-no-ice-activity-on-muni-but-sfusd-helped-to-spread-rumor\/\">false claims<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local immigration nonprofits have cautioned against spreading rumours and panic. They have warned against spreading unverified reports of raids. (<em>Here is a&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/01\/immigrants-resources-before-trump-inauguration\/\"><em>breakdown<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;of what else immigrants should know under Trump.)&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrmugglesdogs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.broadstreetads.com\/assets\/5aef6223-eb0e-48d7-a632-9156bb330cc5.png\" alt=\"Mr. Muggles\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are going to make sure that our sanctuary policies and laws that have been in place for decades here in San Francisco continue. We are not going to support warrantless searches.
