Kennedy Jr<\/a>. in a positive light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Eric Reinhart, a political anthropologist and psychoanalytic clinician,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/_Eric_Reinhart\/status\/1885354653753225538\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;his piece, which the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/story\/2025-01-29\/rfk-jr-trump-health-reform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published<\/a>&nbsp;on Wednesday, was originally titled, &#8220;RFK Jr.&#8217;s Wrecking Ball Won&#8217;t Fix Public Health.&#8221; However,&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;editors ran the article under the title, &#8220;Trump&#8217;s Healthcare Disruption Could Pay Off\u2014If He Pushes Real Reform.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My first time working with the&nbsp;<em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>, and I expect also my last,&#8221; Reinhart&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/_Eric_Reinhart\/status\/1885353311827620178\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;on social media Friday. &#8220;A vote for RFK Jr. is a vote for nothing but chaos, the opposite of the essential public-systems building I argue for in the op-ed, and mass death.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Editors edit and control final copy and [headline], I get that,&#8221; Reinhart added. &#8220;But editing out a very central and timely point in the minutes before sending to press while then also assigning a title and image that suggest an argument entirely opposite to the author&#8217;s clear intent is bad.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?dnt=false&#038;embedId=twitter-widget-0&#038;features=e30%3D&#038;frame=false&#038;hideCard=false&#038;hideThread=false&#038;id=1885353129224335747&#038;lang=en&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fla-times-rfk-jr&#038;partner=rebelmouse&#038;sessionId=e654684892b87dc555067f4d86b680fd69933309&#038;siteScreenName=commondreams&#038;siteUserId=14296273&#038;theme=light&#038;widgetsVersion=2615f7e52b7e0%3A1702314776716&#038;width=550px<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As&nbsp;<em>The New Republic<\/em>&#8216;s Ellie Quinlan Houghtaling&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/post\/191007\/la-times-robert-f-kennedy-jr-donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;Friday:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1mNFm4sL4DiGn06vykaH6vejIUjHcALep\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">original<\/a>&nbsp;and final versions of Reinhart&#8217;s article differ drastically in message. The first paragraph of the published opinion piece takes an optimistic tone about Kennedy&#8217;s role in the Trump administration, suggesting that the virulent conspiracy theorist could be an answer and solution to the American public&#8217;s bubbling resentment toward the healthcare industry.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Writing Friday on the social media platform Bluesky, Reinhart\u2014who called the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;editors&#8217; actions &#8220;pretty shitty&#8221;\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/ericreinhart.bsky.social\/post\/3lh2epknydk2u\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;his draft does &#8220;not leave my stance on RFK Jr. remotely ambiguous.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s dangerously ignorant, egomaniacal, and effectively a mass murderer in waiting,&#8221; the doctor added. &#8220;He has no business being anywhere near HHS.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biotech billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong, who has owned the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;since 2018,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/patrick-soon-shiong-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prompted<\/a>&nbsp;a wave of staff resignations and reader subscription cancellations following his issuance last month of an internal memo asking the members of the newspaper&#8217;s board and opinion writers to &#8220;take a break from writing about Trump.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This, after Soon-Shiong blocked its editorial board from endorsing former Democratic Vice President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/kamala-harris\">Kamala Harris<\/a>&nbsp;for president, a decision he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/13\/media\/la-times-harris-endorsement-gaza-war-editorial-board\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a>&nbsp;was based partly on a desire for more balance in the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;opinion section and partly on Harris&#8217; complicity in the U.S.-backed Israeli annihilation of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/gaza\">Gaza<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this week, Soon-Shiong&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DrPatSoonShiong\/status\/1884389165380559249\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;on social media: &#8220;I had not met&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/bobby-kennedy\">Bobby Kennedy<\/a>&nbsp;until a few months ago. The more I got to know him I truly believe he has the American public&#8217;s best interests at heart. I have worried about toxins and the cause of cancer my entire career. As a physician-scientist I really hope he is confirmed&#8221; as health and human services secretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/01\/31\/la-times-rfk-jr-opinion-patrick-soon-shiong-010210\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published<\/a>&nbsp;Friday by&nbsp;<em>Politico<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;vice president of communications Hillary Manning said that &#8220;our editors in opinion work with op-ed contributors to edit pieces for length, clarity, and accuracy, among other things,&#8221; and that &#8220;no op-ed pieces are published, as edited, without the permission of the author. That includes the op-ed written by Eric Reinhart.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reinhart retorted by saying, &#8220;What makes it concerning to me is the background of the owner&#8217;s politics and known record of interference and editorial processes of the newspaper.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added, &#8220;The depressing public health issue that was unfolding just as the op-ed was published&#8230; is, &#8216;Are we or are we not going to confirm RFK Jr. for this incredibly important position for which he is massively and dangerously underqualified?'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
