Ivana Marie Trump<\/strong> (n\u00e9e<\/a> Zeln\u00ed\u010dkov\u00e1<\/strong>;[a]<\/a><\/sup> February 20, 1949 \u2013 July 14, 2022) was a Czech-American businesswoman, socialite<\/a>, and model. She lived in Canada<\/a> in the 1970s, before relocating to the United States and marrying Donald Trump<\/a> in 1977. She held key managerial positions in the Trump Organization<\/a>, as vice president of interior design, CEO and president of Trump’s Castle casino resort, and manager of the Plaza Hotel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ivana and Donald Trump were prominent figures in New York society throughout the 1980s. The couple’s divorce, granted in 1990, was the subject of extensive media coverage.[b]<\/a><\/sup> Following the divorce, she developed her own lines of clothing, fashion jewelry, and beauty products which were sold on QVC UK<\/a> and the Home Shopping Network<\/a>. She wrote an advice column for Globe<\/a><\/em> called “Ask Ivana” from 1995 through 2010, and published several books, including works of fiction, self-help, and the autobiography Raising Trump<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early life and education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ivana Marie Zeln\u00ed\u010dkov\u00e1[a]<\/a><\/sup> was born on February 20, 1949, in Gottwaldov, Czechoslovakia<\/a> (now Zl\u00edn<\/a>, Czech Republic<\/a>), the daughter of Milo\u0161 Zeln\u00ed\u010dek (1927- 1990) and Marie Zeln\u00ed\u010dkov\u00e1 (n\u00e9e Francov\u00e1, b. 1926).[2]<\/a><\/sup>[3]<\/a><\/sup>[4]<\/a><\/sup> She was raised in a Catholic<\/a> household.[5]<\/a><\/sup> Her father was an electrical engineer<\/a> and her mother worked as a telephone operator.[6]<\/a><\/sup> Her father encouraged his daughter’s skiing<\/a> abilities, a practice she began at age four.[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup> After developing skills as a skier, Ivana joined the junior national ski team, which offered her opportunities to travel beyond the Soviet-era<\/a> communist boundaries of what was then the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic.[6]<\/a><\/sup> She attended Charles University<\/a> in Prague and earned a master’s degree in physical education<\/a> in 1972.[8]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup> In 1970, Ivana appeared on Czechoslovak Television<\/a> in the children’s television series Pan Tau<\/a><\/em>.[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1988, Ivana told journalists that she was selected as an alternate on the Czechoslovak ski team during the 1972 Winter Olympics<\/a>, specializing in downhill<\/a> and slalom<\/a>.[10]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup> However, Czechoslovakia only sent four female athletes to the 1972 Winter Olympics and none were alpine skiers. In 1989, Petr Pomezn\u00fd, Secretary General of the Czechoslovak Olympic Committee<\/a>, denied Ivana’s claim and stated that, despite searching extensively, no record could be found of her involvement.[8]<\/a><\/sup> In 2021, Snopes<\/a> confirmed that Czechoslovakia had not sent female alpine skiers to the 1972 Winter Olympics.[11]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emigration to Canada<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 1971, Ivana married Alfred Winklmayr, an Austrian<\/a> ski instructor and her platonic friend, in order to obtain Austrian citizenship.[12]<\/a><\/sup>[13]<\/a><\/sup>[14]<\/a><\/sup> The marriage granted her the freedom to leave Czechoslovakia without defection<\/a> so she could retain the right to return to visit her parents.[12]<\/a><\/sup>[15]<\/a><\/sup>[13]<\/a><\/sup>[16]<\/a><\/sup> As Ivana Winklmayr, she received her Austrian passport in March 1972.[14]<\/a><\/sup> The following year, she obtained an absentee divorce from Alfred Winklmayr in Los Angeles<\/a>, California<\/a>, where he had moved to teach skiing.[12]<\/a><\/sup>[15]<\/a><\/sup>[14]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ivana was romantically involved with the lyricist and playwright Ji\u0159\u00ed \u0160taidl<\/a> [cs<\/a>] who was killed in a car accident in 1973.[17]<\/a><\/sup> After \u0160taidl’s death, Ivana moved to Canada where she lived with George (Ji\u0159\u00ed) Syrov\u00e1tka whom she had dated since 1967; Syrov\u00e1tka had defected to Canada in 1971 and owned a ski boutique in Montreal.[15]<\/a><\/sup>[12]<\/a><\/sup>[16]<\/a><\/sup> She claimed at the time to be married to Syrov\u00e1tka, though the two never wed.[18]<\/a><\/sup>[19]<\/a><\/sup> Ivana worked as a ski instructor while living in Canada.[20]<\/a><\/sup> She lived in Montreal<\/a> for two years where she continued to improve her English via night courses at McGill University<\/a>.[16]<\/a><\/sup> Working as a model, Ivana told the Montreal Gazette<\/a><\/em> in 1975 that she considered modelling to be a job, rather than a career.[21]<\/a><\/sup> Her modelling clients included Eaton’s<\/a> department store and the fashion designer Auckie Sanft, along with promotional work for the 1976 Summer Olympics<\/a> in Montreal.[16]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ivana was in New York City<\/a> with a group of models in 1976 when she met Donald Trump.[16]<\/a><\/sup> On April 9, 1977, the couple married at Marble Collegiate Church<\/a> in a wedding officiated by Norman Vincent Peale<\/a>.[22]<\/a><\/sup>[23]<\/a><\/sup>[24]<\/a><\/sup>[25]<\/a><\/sup> They became tabloid figures in New York society during the 1980s and worked together on several large projects, including the Trump Tower<\/a> on Fifth Avenue<\/a> in Manhattan, the renovation of the Grand Hyatt Hotel<\/a> in New York City, and the construction of the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort<\/a> in Atlantic City, New Jersey<\/a>.[26]<\/a><\/sup>[27]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the marriage, Ivana and Donald had three children: Donald Jr.<\/a> (born 1977), Ivana (Ivanka) Marie<\/a> (born 1981), and Eric<\/a> (born 1984). Donald Jr. learned to speak fluent Czech<\/a> (with the help of his maternal grandfather), while Ivanka gained only a basic understanding of her mother’s native tongue, and Eric was not exposed to the language since his grandparents were comfortable using English.[28]<\/a><\/sup>[29]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A reviewer of the 2018 Netflix<\/a> documentary miniseries on Donald, Trump: An American Dream<\/a>,<\/em> described Ivana as a “charismatic workaholic, a career woman, an equal”, and a life partner deliberately chosen by Trump to “work beside him and challenge him.”[30]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trumps’ troubled marriage became the subject of public interest over the Christmas holiday<\/a> in 1989 when\u2014on vacation in Aspen, Colorado<\/a>\u2014they were observed fighting after Ivana encountered Donald’s mistress Marla Maples<\/a>.[31]<\/a><\/sup> The Chicago Tribune<\/a><\/em> reported that by February 1990, Donald had locked Ivana out of her office at the Plaza Hotel<\/a>, and a legal battle ensued over the legitimacy of the four prenuptial<\/a> agreements the pair had successively negotiated over the years.[31]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In October 1990, Ivana’s 63-year-old father, Milo\u0161 Zeln\u00ed\u010dek, died suddenly from a heart attack. According to The Guardian<\/a><\/em>, her father was an informer for Czechoslovakia’s St\u00e1tn\u00ed bezpe\u010dnost<\/a> (StB) intelligence service<\/a> who relayed information from his daughter, including a correct prediction that George H. W. Bush<\/a> would win the 1988 presidential election<\/a>.[32]<\/a><\/sup> Despite their marital troubles and pending divorce, Donald stood at her side at her father’s funeral in Zl\u00edn<\/a>[33]<\/a><\/sup> held in November 1990.[32]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trumps’ divorce proceedings received worldwide publicity.[34]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Front-page coverage appeared in New York tabloid newspapers for eleven days in a row, and the story was the subject of gossip columnist\u00a0Liz Smith<\/a>‘s entire news coverage for three months.[35]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In a deposition relating to their divorce, Ivana accused Donald of rape.[36]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In\u00a0Harry Hurt III<\/a>‘s book\u00a0Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump<\/em>, she confirmed that she had “felt violated”. However, in a statement provided by Donald and his lawyers, she said that she had used the word “rape”, but she did not “want [her] words to be interpreted in a literal or criminal sense.”[37]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The uncontested divorce was granted in December 1990 on the grounds of cruel and inhumane treatment by Donald.[34]<\/a>[38]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Ivana had to sign a\u00a0non-disclosure agreement<\/a>\u00a0as a condition of the divorce settlement, and she was required to seek Donald’s permission before publicly discussing their marriage.[37]<\/a>[39]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The New York Times<\/a><\/em>\u00a0reported in 1991 that Ivana’s divorce settlement included $14 million, a 45-room Connecticut mansion, an apartment in the\u00a0Trump Plaza<\/a>, and the use of\u00a0Mar-a-Lago<\/a>\u00a0for one month a year.[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n
