argued one progressive organizer. &#8220;They have zero credibility to be leading the fights we face today.&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/jake-johnson\">JAKE JOHNSON<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Feb 12, 2025 (CommonDreams.org)<a href=\"https:\/\/giving.commondreams.org\/-\/XKQWGZVR\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>House Democratic lawmakers reportedly used a closed-door meeting earlier this week to vent their frustrations with progressive advocacy groups that have been driving constituent calls and pressuring the party to act like a genuine opposition force in the face of the Trump administration&#8217;s authoritarian assault on federal agencies and key programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Citing unnamed sources, including a senior House Democrat,&nbsp;<em>Axios<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/02\/06\/democrats-congress-trump-musk-doge-calls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;Tuesday that the private meeting &#8220;included a gripe-fest&#8221; directed at &#8220;groups like MoveOn and Indivisible,&#8221; which have &#8220;facilitated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/02\/06\/democrats-congress-trump-musk-doge-calls\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thousands of phone calls to members&#8217; offices<\/a>&#8221; and pressured the party to use its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/indivisible.org\/resource\/explainer-how-senate-democrats-can-delay-defy-trumps-agenda-procedural-hardball\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">considerable power<\/a>&nbsp;to disrupt business as usual in Congress, including by opposing all&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/democratic-party-unanimous-consent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unanimous consent requests<\/a>&nbsp;from the Republican majority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unnamed senior House Democrat told&nbsp;<em>Axios<\/em>&nbsp;that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) is &#8220;very frustrated&#8221; with the progressive organizations, which have urged people across the country to contact their Democratic representatives and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/02\/06\/democrats-congress-trump-musk-doge-calls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pressure them to fight harder<\/a>&nbsp;against the Trump administration and their Republican allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Britt Jacovich, a spokesperson for MoveOn, told&nbsp;<em>Axios<\/em>&nbsp;that &#8220;our member energy is high and this won&#8217;t be the last any office hears from everyday Americans who want us to fight harder to push back.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>https:\/\/embed.bsky.app\/embed\/did:plc:z6dj45iqfftjbhvlhfnswc3y\/app.bsky.feed.post\/3lhwlbmamkr2u?id=07143398543762403&#038;ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.commondreams.org%252Fnews%252Fdemocrats-progressive-groups<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reports of internal Democratic frustrations with grassroots progressives come days after Jeffries questioned the leverage his caucus has to stop the Trump administration and unelected billionaire&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/elon-musk\">Elon Musk<\/a>&nbsp;from imposing their will on the federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They control the House, the Senate, and the presidency,&#8221; Jeffries&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/kenklippenstein\/status\/1888718209034969571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;reporters late last week. &#8220;It&#8217;s their government.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), meanwhile, has said Democrats are &#8220;not going to go after every single issue&#8221; in the fight against President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are picking the most important fights and lying down on the train tracks on those fights,&#8221; Schumer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/02\/us\/politics\/democrats-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a><em>The New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s not the kind of all-out confrontational approach that rank-and-file Democrats clearly want from their elected representatives. According to a CBS News\/YouGov&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/democrats-want-party-oppose-trump-poll-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey<\/a>&nbsp;released earlier this week, 65% of Democratic voters want the party to &#8220;&#8216;oppose Trump as much as possible,&#8221; up from 46% in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The poll also found that just 16% of Democratic voters have &#8220;a lot&#8221; of confidence that congressional Democrats &#8220;can oppose Trump effectively.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer are architects of the crisis that allowed Trump&#8217;s fascism to arise and succeed,&#8221; progressive organizer Aaron Regunberg&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AaronRegunberg\/status\/1889387043786006828\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;Tuesday. &#8220;They have zero credibility to be leading the fights we face today\u2014not in their record, their competency, or their recent performance. Quite simply, they have to go.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Forcing recorded votes is possible. Frequent quorum calls are possible. A wide variety of dilatory motions are possible. In short, harassing the majority is possible. If they think it&#8217;s a bad idea, say so. If they say it&#8217;s not possible, they&#8217;re lying.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andy Craig, director of election policy at the Rainey Center, urged Americans to keep up the calls to Democratic lawmakers, noting that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/indivisible.org\/resource\/explainer-how-senate-democrats-can-delay-defy-trumps-agenda-procedural-hardball\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">progressive demands<\/a>&nbsp;&#8220;are 100% doable.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Objecting to unanimous consents is possible,&#8221; Craig&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/andycraig.bsky.social\/post\/3lhxjeoccxd27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;early Wednesday. &#8220;Forcing recorded votes is possible. If they say it&#8217;s not possible, they&#8217;re lying.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;editorial board member Mara Gay&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/10\/opinion\/chuck-schumer-hakeem-jeffries-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a>&nbsp;in a column earlier this week that both Schumer and Jeffries &#8220;have struggled to shed the familiar rhythms of business as usual&#8221; even amid Trump&#8217;s lawless onslaught, which experts say has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-ignores-court-orders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sparked a full-blown constitutional crisis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday, Senate Democrats&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/legislative\/LIS\/floor_activity\/floor_activity.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">did not object<\/a>&nbsp;to a GOP unanimous consent request to advance the confirmation process for Tulsi Gabbard, Trump&#8217;s pick to serve as Director of National Intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Holy shit. Schumer and the Senate Democrats couldn&#8217;t object to a basic UC (unanimous consent) time agreement to slow down a nominee like Gabbard?&#8221; progressive strategist Murshed Zaheed\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/murshedz.bsky.social\/post\/3lhx3v24uts2s\" target=\"_blank\">asked<\/a>\u00a0late Tuesday. &#8220;Disgraceful and humiliating surrender from these Democrats as they continue to hit your inboxes and messages begging (spamming) for money.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
