The initiative is designed to foster solidarity, support for Ukraine and to deliver a sign of hope amid the devastating conflict faced by the nation.

Zubkov, who established the nonprofit “Support Ukraine With Us,” was driven by his personal experiences in Ukraine, his home country, where he was involved in humanitarian efforts.

The inception of his nonprofit stemmed from a personal moment of crisis. Overwhelmed by the news of the invasion, he immediately contacted his friends and family, informing them of the outbreak of the war. Zubkov’s response to the initial shock was to fully dedicate himself to helping the cause.

After participating in a San Francisco protest, he felt that it was not enough. Zubkov tried to reach out to other nonprofit organizations, but was not certain how his donations would be utilized.

This uncertainty led him to develop his own organization with some of his high school friends, Maria Oreta, Tetiana Korotkova and Maria Silvanskaya. The group sought to support their hometown, where it was hard to find medicine, food, gas and other necessities due to the conflict.

After spending six months in Ukraine, Zubkov reinstated himself as a Ph.D. student on campus and organized the first bell playing in 2023.

“After you visit multiple shelters with refugees and talk to them about what they went through, when you see kids who lost their parents or siblings or talk to someone who was the only survivor from their family after Russia struck their house with a rocket, you will not be able to see life the same,” Zubkov wrote in an email. “That’s why I wanted to do something: to deliver a smile to all local Ukrainians in Berkeley.”

Once he had organized this first bell ringing on campus in 2023, Zubkov wanted to expand this initiative to a larger scale. The “Support Ukraine With Us” organization was able to garner eight towers, mostly on United States college campuses, to play the Ukrainian anthem as well as other songs in 2024.

Other participating colleges this year include UC Santa Barbara and the University of Texas, Austin. Zubkov explained that a college campus is the right place to play these songs, as they are places of freedom and understanding.

The “Support Ukraine With Us” Organization plans to expand this initiative beyond college campuses and across the world.

“Metropolitan United Church will play Ukrainian pieces in Toronto, Canada, and we are even reaching out to schools and churches across Eastern Europe. We would also like to ask locals across these different countries to record their respective bell ringing, so we can put together a short memorial film,” Zubkov said in the email. “Let the music and sound of the bells dissolve the sorrow and pain of human hearts like a candle dissolves the shadows of the darkest rooms in the world with its glow.”

Approaching the three year anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine, the Campanile will play the Ukrainian national anthem Feb. 24, anchoring a nationwide initiative spearheaded by Maksym Zubkov, a postdoctoral fellow in math at the University of British Columbia and a UC Berkeley Ph.D. alumnus.
