Beltway.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For better or worse, that is not going to happen,&#8221; said the Vermont Independent senator, whose broadly popular policy proposals have long been dismissed by Democratic leaders as unrealistic and radical while President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>&nbsp;has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/working-class-voters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increasingly captured<\/a>&nbsp;the attention of the working class Americans who would benefit most from Sanders&#8217; ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It will only be defeated by millions of Americans in Iowa, in Vermont, in Nebraska, in every state in this country, who come together in a strong grassroots movement and say no to oligarchy, no to authoritarianism, no to kleptocracy, no to massive cuts to programs that low-income and working Americans desperately need, no to huge tax breaks for the wealthiest people in this country,&#8221; said Sanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The senator&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/bernie-sanders-oligarchy-2671150482\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;his tour earlier this month as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/elon-musk\">Elon Musk<\/a>, the head of the Trump-created&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/department-of-government-efficiency\">Department of Government Efficiency<\/a>(&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/doge\">DOGE<\/a>) who poured $277 million on the president&#8217;s campaign, swept through numerous agencies, with DOGE staffers setting up&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/federal-workers-sue-over-musk-led-exfiltration-of-data-using-illegal-server\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">illegal servers<\/a>, seizing control of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/musk-treasury-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data<\/a>, shutting federal employees out of offices, and working to shut down operations across the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Trump took office for his second term just over a month ago, roughly 30,000 federal employees have been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/how-many-federal-employees-fired-jobs-cut-trump-doge.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fired or laid off<\/a>\u2014part of Musk&#8217;s push to cut $2 trillion in federal spending in order to fill the $4.6 trillion hole that Trump&#8217;s extension of the 2017 tax cuts would blow in the deficit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Republican lawmakers have also pushed to include&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/senate-republicans-medicaid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cuts<\/a>&nbsp;to Medicaid, and Trump this week&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;rct=j&amp;opi=89978449&amp;url=https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-on-medicaid&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiXqpG0_NeLAxUKFFkFHaAiN6YQvOMEKAB6BAgUEAE&amp;usg=AOvVaw0dxGP_QQWRHG5QVoz8Onlz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signaled<\/a>&nbsp;he would back Medicare cuts after repeatedly insisting he would not slash the popular healthcare program used by more than 65 million Americans, in order to save money while handing out tax cuts to the same corporations and ultrawealthy households that benefited from the 2017 tax law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Today in America we are rapidly moving toward an oligarchic form of society where a handful of multibillionaires not only have extraordinary wealth, but unprecedented economic, media, and political power,&#8221; said Sanders in Iowa City, which like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/5154428-moderate-republicans-oppose-house-budget-resolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Omaha<\/a>&nbsp;is represented by a Republican U.S. House member who narrowly won reelection last November and has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairnessforiowa.org\/news\/constituents-visit-offices-of-reps-miller-meeks-and-nunn-asking-them-to-have-a-heart-protect-medicaid-not-billionaire-tax-breaks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">faced pressure<\/a>&nbsp;to reject the GOP budget plan. &#8220;Brothers and sisters, that is not the democracy that men and women fought and died to defend.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sanders began his tour in Omaha and Iowa City to pressure the Republican House members there\u2014Reps. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) and Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa) out of supporting the GOP&#8217;s proposed cuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Together, we can stop Republicans from cutting Medicaid and giving tax breaks to billionaires,&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BernieSanders\/status\/1893331494485000524\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Sanders ahead of the Iowa City event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/fshakir\/status\/1893362793719459906?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1893362793719459906%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fbernie-sanders-donald-trump\">https:\/\/x.com\/fshakir\/status\/1893362793719459906?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1893362793719459906%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fbernie-sanders-donald-trump<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sanders drew loud applause when he noted that the increasingly oligarchic political system extends past just Trump, Musk, and Republican lawmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The role of billionaires in politics, it&#8217;s not just Musk, it&#8217;s others,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s not just Republican billionaires, it is Democratic billionaires. It is the corruption of the two-party system.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Progressive activists and journalists in recent weeks have expressed growing frustration with Democratic leaders as they have publicly appeared to throw up their hands and deny they have any power to fight Trump&#8217;s attacks on immigrants, transgender children, and other marginalized people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/02\/07\/hakeem-jeffries-silicon-valley-donors-00203076\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">garnered scorn<\/a>&nbsp;for meeting with Silicon Valley executives to &#8220;mend fences&#8221; with the powerful tech sector\u2014where numerous CEOs have signaled support for Trump during his second term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ken Martin, the newly elected chair of the Democratic National Committee,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/kenklippenstein\/status\/1885757633094721798\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;last month that the party should continue to take money from &#8220;good billionaires.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some Democratic senators have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/senate-democrats-pam-bondi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voted<\/a>&nbsp;for Trump&#8217;s Cabinet nominees even as members of the caucus have accused Musk of orchestrating a coup on Trump&#8217;s behalf, and leaders including Jeffries have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/democrats-progressive-groups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly<\/a>&nbsp;become &#8220;very frustrated&#8221; with progressive advocacy groups like Indivisible and MoveOn for organizing grassroots efforts to pressure the Democrats to act as a true opposition party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Sanders this weekend has captured the attention of thousands of people in Republican districts along with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/anna_bahr\/status\/1893118833705074852\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hundreds of thousands&nbsp;<\/a>of people who have watched his anti-oligarchy tour online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The energy around what Bernie is doing is insane,&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/matthewstoller\/status\/1893300872249024732\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Matt Stoller, a researcher at the American Economic Liberties Project. &#8220;It&#8217;s like there&#8217;s only one person who is actually able to sidestep the demoralization and frustration.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jeremyslevin\/status\/1893122398427189609?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1893122398427189609%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fbernie-sanders-donald-trump\">https:\/\/x.com\/jeremyslevin\/status\/1893122398427189609?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1893122398427189609%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fbernie-sanders-donald-trump<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeremy Slevin, a senior adviser to Sanders,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jeremyslevin\/status\/1893368812340158578\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;that in Iowa City, the senator gave &#8220;not one, not two, but three different speeches to overflow crowds,&#8221;
