Also, Columbia has hired over 30 &#8220;special officers&#8221; who will have the ability to remove individuals from campus and arrest them, per the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/president.columbia.edu\/content\/fulfilling-our-commitments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">memo<\/a>&nbsp;from the school announcing the update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday evening, writer Ross Barkan&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RossBarkan\/status\/1903245869161296323\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;on X, &#8220;I confess I don&#8217;t get Columbia folding. Don&#8217;t they have an endowment worth many billions? Very rich alumni? Alumni who hate Trump? They could do a massive &#8216;resistance&#8217; fundraiser to make up for lost federal dollars. Very odd and very weak.&#8221; Others&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/clarajeffery.bsky.social\/post\/3lkwn2ih4rs23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">echoed<\/a>&nbsp;this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/helenkennedy.bsky.social\/post\/3lkwbfpnots2z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sentiment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Columbia&#8217;s capitulation to fascist government intervention is so severe when you really look at the details,&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nsdoud\/status\/1903203323576193158\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote&nbsp;<\/a>Nour Joudah, an assistant professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, on X. &#8220;This is pathetic.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaders at Columbia&#8217;s Knight First Amendment Institute expressed sadness. &#8220;The administration held up the university at gunpoint, but I can&#8217;t help but feel that Columbia has lost something it may never regain,&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/alexabdo.bsky.social\/post\/3lkwmrlqvgs2f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;the litigation director at the Knight Institute, Alex Abdo, on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jameel Jaffer, executive director of the Knight Institute,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/jameeljaffer.bsky.social\/post\/3lkw4bjwt522f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;on Bluesky that it is &#8220;a sad day for Columbia and for our democracy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The episode highlight&#8217;s the Trump administration&#8217;s escalating scrutiny of higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In February, U.S. President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>&nbsp;signed an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/additional-measures-to-combat-anti-semitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">executive order<\/a>&nbsp;with the purported aim of rooting out antisemitism on college campuses, and has vowed to go after foreign-born students who have engaged in pro-Palestine protests, which he has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/columbia-university-mahmoud-khalil-ice-6964107d218dba43eb995d6dbbe528b1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deemed<\/a>&nbsp;&#8220;anti-American activity.&#8221; The Department of Education\u2014which the Trump administration is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-department-of-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">endeavoring<\/a>&nbsp;to shut down\u2014has also launched&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/dept-of-education-attacks-trump-administration-colleges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investigations<\/a>&nbsp;into dozens of universities over alleged &#8220;race-exclusionary practices.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Columbia has so far been at the center of the administration&#8217;s feud with universities. In a March 7 press release, members of Trump&#8217;s Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/about\/news\/2025\/03\/07\/doj-hhs-ed-gsa-announce-initial-cancellation-grants-contracts-columbia-university-worth-400-million.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbiaspectator.com\/news\/2025\/03\/07\/trump-administration-cuts-400-million-in-federal-funding-to-columbia\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cancellation<\/a>&nbsp;of $400 million, and a day later immigration agents&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/mahmoud-khalil-wife-statement\">arrested<\/a>&nbsp;a recent Columbia University graduate who played a major role in pro-Palestine demonstrations last year. The arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a legal permanent resident, has been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SEIU\/photos\/abducting-and-detaining-mahmoud-khalil-is-an-outrageous-assault-on-free-speech-d\/1085837063581986\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">widely<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2025\/03\/usa-arrest-and-detention-of-mahmoud-khalil-is-chilling-attack-on-human-rights\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">decried<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On March 13, the Trump administration&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/prem_thakker\/status\/1900341950865133986?s=46\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sent<\/a>&nbsp;a letter to Columbia University Interim President Katrina Armstrong outlining a series of steps that Columbia must comply with in order to maintain a &#8220;continued financial relationship&#8221; between the school and the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the nine demands was a call for disciplinary proceedings for students involved in last year&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbiaspectator.com\/news\/2024\/04\/17\/dozens-of-protesters-occupy-south-lawn-call-for-divestment-from-israel-ahead-of-shafik-testimony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gaza Solidarity Encampments<\/a>&nbsp;and occupation of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/columbia-hamilton-hall\">Hamilton Hall<\/a>. The same day Columbia received the letter it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/columbia-protests\">issued<\/a>&nbsp;expulsions, multi-year suspensions, and temporary degree revocations for students involved in the Hamilton occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An senior administrator at Columbia told the&nbsp;<em>Journal&nbsp;<\/em>that the university had considered legal challenges to resist the demands, but decided that the federal government had too many ways to take back money from the university. Columbia has an endowment of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbiaspectator.com\/news\/2024\/10\/16\/columbias-endowment-rises-to-148-billion-on-pace-to-outperform-peer-institutions-in-investment-returns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">about<\/a>&nbsp;$15 billion, though according to the outlet it would not &#8220;take long for it to cease to operate in any recognizable form without government money.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Additionally the school believed there was considerable overlap between needed campus changes and Trump&#8217;s demands,&#8221; according to the\u00a0<em>Journal<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
