Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) last week\u2014but he was short on details of how Democrats plan to hold President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In terms of how we will respond to what Trump and the administration has endeavored to do, we will make that decision in a time, place, and manner of our choosing. But the response will be continuous and it will meet the moment that is required,&#8221; said Jeffries. &#8220;In terms of additional things that may take place with respect to our congressional oversight, authority, and capacity, we will respond in a time, place, and manner of our choosing if this continues to happen.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rights advocate Aaron Regunberg said Jeffries appeared to be &#8220;a literal human embodiment of fecklessness&#8221; in the interview, which followed outcry in recent months about Democratic leaders&#8217;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/columbia-university-arrests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">refusal<\/a>&nbsp;to unequivocally defend detained Columbia University pro-Palestinian organizer Mahmoud Khalil and their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/democrats-progressive-groups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">insistence<\/a>&nbsp;that the Democrats should be selective about which Trump policies they fight against.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s terrifying, to be up against what we&#8217;re up against with leadership this weak,&#8221; said Regunberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?dnt=false&#038;embedId=twitter-widget-0&#038;features=e30%3D&#038;frame=false&#038;hideCard=false&#038;hideThread=false&#038;id=1929556549988466826&#038;lang=en&#038;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fhouse-democrats-and-jeffries&#038;partner=rebelmouse&#038;sessionId=9b8359f36bdaf8283305e535fc3677e15ed3bcbd&#038;siteScreenName=commondreams&#038;siteUserId=14296273&#038;theme=light&#038;widgetsVersion=2615f7e52b7e0%3A1702314776716&#038;width=550px<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeffries&#8217; interview with&nbsp;<em>CNN<\/em>&nbsp;came days after officers with the Federal Protective Service, part of DHS, entered Nadler&#8217;s office in Manhattan and handcuffed one of his aides, claiming the staff was &#8220;harboring rioters in the office.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nadler&#8217;s office is located in the same building as an immigration courtroom where protesters and rights advocates had gathered to speak out against the administration&#8217;s policy of detaining immigrants when they appear in court for legal proceedings as they are required to, and to advise people that they have a right to remain silent if they&#8217;re detained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Courtrooms have typically been treated as sensitive places where immigration agents can&#8217;t detain people, but Trump has changed that with his mass deportation operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 20-year-old New York City public school student was detained by federal agents at an immigration court last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert Gottheim, Nadler&#8217;s chief of staff,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/31\/nyregion\/nadler-aide-handcuffed-federal-agents.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a><em>The New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;that the confrontation between DHS and the aide happened after a member of the congressman&#8217;s staff invited the immigrant rights advocates into Nadler&#8217;s office, hoping to deescalate tensions after federal agents accused the advocates of loitering and threatened to arrest them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gottheim said the agents were also angry because Nadler&#8217;s staff had witnessed them arresting migrants who were leaving the courtroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DHS released a statement Saturday claiming that agents had been told protesters were in Nadler&#8217;s office and that they were concerned for the congressional staffers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;One individual became verbally confrontational and physically blocked access to the office,&#8221; said the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A video obtained by\u00a0<em>Gothamist<\/em>\u00a0showed an agent handcuffing a crying aide while another official told one of Nadler&#8217;s staff members that the agents didn&#8217;t have or need a warrant for the arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TheTNHoller\/status\/1929012953170272364?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1929012953170272364%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fhouse-democrats-and-jeffries\">https:\/\/x.com\/TheTNHoller\/status\/1929012953170272364?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1929012953170272364%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fhouse-democrats-and-jeffries<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Trump administration is trying to intimidate members of Congress,&#8221; Nadler told the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;on Saturday. &#8220;They&#8217;re behaving like fascists&#8230; We have to fight them. We don&#8217;t want to be a fascist country.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Journalist Mehdi Hasan of&nbsp;<em>Zeteo<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mehdirhasan\/status\/1929369775093764108\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Jeffries&#8217; response to the incident in Nadler&#8217;s office made clear he is not &#8220;the right person to be leading the Dems in the House in this historic, fascistic moment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bash&#8217;s questioning on Sunday also pertained to the Trump administration&#8217;s decision to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/26\/nyregion\/lamonica-mciver-newark-assault-charges.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">charge<\/a>&nbsp;Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.) with two counts of assault\u2014charges that carry a potential punishment of 16 years in prison\u2014for a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/mayor-of-newark-nj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">clash<\/a>&nbsp;with immigration officers outside a detention center in Newark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A joint statement released on May 19 by Jeffries, Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.), House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.), Vice Caucus Chair Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), and Assistant Democratic Leader Joe Neguse (D-Colo.) vehemently condemned the charges against McIver, but the content was similar to Jeffries&#8217; comments on&nbsp;<em>CNN.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Everyone responsible for this illegitimate abuse of power is going to be held accountable for their actions,&#8221;\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/jeffries.house.gov\/2025\/05\/19\/joint-democratic-leadership-statement-on-rep-lamonica-mciver\/\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>\u00a0the statement in part. &#8220;House Democrats will respond vigorously in the days to come at a time, place, and manner of our choosing.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
