Photo by Joe Rivano Barros.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As they do&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2024\/07\/july-4-mission-sfpd-fireworks-riot-police\/\">most every year<\/a>, Mission District revelers blasted music, danced in the streets, and set off hundreds of fireworks at intersections across the neighborhood to celebrate the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/07\/july-4-sf-what-it-means-to-be-american\/\">Fourth of July<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2023\/07\/sfpd-rushes-disperses-july-4th-crowd-in-the-mission\/\">like clockwork<\/a>, San Francisco police officers rushed the crowds again this year, ordering them to disperse a little before 11 p.m. and then giving chase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have four minutes to leave the area,\u201d Lt. Manny Bonilla, who earlier this week became the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/07\/mission-station-has-a-new-police-captain-but-its-unclear-if-hell-stay\/\">acting captain of Mission Station<\/a>, said at 10:49 p.m. He was speaking through an SUV-mounted loudspeaker to about 200 people gathered at 26th Street and Treat Avenue, by Garfield Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mission-local-logo-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mission Local logo, with blue and orange lines on the shape of the Mission District\" class=\"wp-image-639216\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Want the latest on the Mission and San Francisco? Force may be used.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The crowd, a block away and surrounded by noisemakers and revelrous shouting, could hear nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The police and deputies then sprinted down the street at 10:58 p.m., batons ready and yelling \u201cGo!\u201d and \u201cMove, move!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"San Francisco police clear Mission District July 4 fireworks\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ved_oq6FQS0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">San Francisco police officers and sheriff\u2019s deputies rushing the crowds. Video by Joe Rivano Barros.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The crowd seemed to hold its ground for a moment while officers ran towards them; a large white firework burst in front of them and temporarily shielded the police from view. Several people unhurriedly walked away, while others stood defiant on the crosswalk, waiting. Stragglers set off half a dozen fireworks and shouted \u201cFuck off!\u201d as the officers charged.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then everyone fled, leaving behind ashes, beer bottles, and burnt fireworks boxes. Sheriff\u2019s deputies aimed less-lethal rifles, and one shot his at least three times after a firework was launched into the officers\u2019 scrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A woman ran up to the police and said she had lost track of some children and was going to go looking for them, but the officers held her back. \u201cIt\u2019s not gonna happen,\u201d one said repeatedly, until another person escorted her away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One man was detained in handcuffs and led away by three officers. The San Francisco Police Department, in a statement, said the man was taken into custody after \u201cofficers developed probable cause to arrest the adult male who was in possession of a firearm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The department said it issued dispersal orders \u201cdue to illegal fireworks being ignited and shot toward officers.\u201d Police had been monitoring the crowds for hours beforehand, including with an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/06\/were-going-to-be-covering-the-entire-city-with-drones-billionaires-donation-to-sfpd-accepted\/\">aerial drone<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cat-and-mouse game that often happens on July 4, where police officers rush and hold corner after corner, chasing the crowds, began: Police declared another unlawful assembly at 24th and Harrison streets at 11:33 p.m. About 30 people had been shooting off fireworks, albeit a fraction of the size of those earlier at Treat. Groups of officers congregated on corners, and police SUVs patrolled the streets. Pop\u2019s Bar and Rubin\u2019s Market liquor store hosted late stayers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Garfield Park is the usual spot for the Mission\u2019s Fourth of July \u2014 before officers arrived, crowds had been lighting fireworks for hours while listening to the likes of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=H58vbez_m4E&amp;list=RDH58vbez_m4E&amp;start_radio=1\">Not Like Us<\/a>\u201d by Kendrick Lamar and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qG27ZXU6QBQ\">Soak City<\/a>\u201d by 310babii. One of the main attractions of the night \u2014 other than the pyrotechnics \u2014&nbsp;was a young man in a Batman costume, who drew a crowd of fans chanting his name and raising their arms for selfies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But within a few minutes of The Dark Knight\u2019s arrival, the police had rolled up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"San Francisco sheriff&#039;s deputies in the Mission on July 4\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/D4xWiAIOhzU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sheriff\u2019s deputies advancing towards another, smaller crowd nearby. The police appeared largely unconcerned with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dirt bikers roamed around the neighborhood. At least two Waymo autonomous vehicles were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DLtqNTNuQ1m\/\">briefly trapped<\/a>&nbsp;by the fireworks, much to the enjoyment of onlookers, who sandwiched one between explosions until they grew bored.
