CBS News<\/a> anchor John Dickerson became the latest network heavyweight to publicly rebuke CBS\u2019s parent company, Paramount Global, after its $16 million settlement<\/a> with President Donald Trump<\/a> \u2013 a move he called a blow to journalistic integrity and public trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a blistering monologue during CBS Evening News Plus on Wednesday, Dickerson tore into the company\u2019s decision to pay Trump to end his $20 billion lawsuit<\/a> over a \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe pride ourselves on our B.S. detector, so it ought to work on ourselves, too,\u201d Dickerson warned at the start of the newscast. \u201cWhen it doesn\u2019t, the stakes are real: a loss of public trust, the spread of misinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: \u201cThe Paramount settlement poses a new obstacle: can you hold power to account after paying it millions? Can an audience trust you when it thinks you\u2019ve traded away that trust? The audience will decide that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s lawsuit alleged \u201c60 Minutes\u201d deceptively edited the 2024<\/a> interview to make Harris appear more favorable on Israel<\/a>, the Daily Beast<\/a> reported. The program later released full transcripts showing that the editing was a routine time-cutting decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThough Paramount refused to apologize or express regret, it handed Trump another victory in his crusade against media outlets he perceives as political enemies,\u201d the Daily Beast report said. \u201cParamount also denied that the settlement had anything to do with a pending merger with Skydance, which will require approval from the Trump administration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dickerson\u2019s searing remarks follow internal outrage over the settlement. CBS\u2019s Bill Whitaker, who conducted the Harris interview, reportedly appeared \u201cteary-eyed\u201d during a staff meeting after the deal, according to the report. While veteran broadcaster Dan Rather called it an \u201cextortion by the president\u201d and a \u201ckneeling-down and saying, \u2018Yes, Sir,\u2019 by billionaire corporate owners.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
