UC Berkeley Chancellor Rich Lyons was scheduled to testify on July 9 about the university\u2019s handling of anti-Israel demonstrations that swept across his campus and many others throughout 2024 after the\u00a0Hamas invasion of Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, Israel\u2019s retaliation and the war in Gaza. On Thursday, federal officials canceled that hearing.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UC received more than $4 billion in federal research grants last year. The Trump administration has already&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/california\/article\/trump-research-grants-college-20290739.php\" class=\"\">rescinded at least $312 million<\/a>&nbsp;of those grants because they centered on research involving people of color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/embed.documentcloud.org\/documents\/25989783-letter-from-president-drake-chancellors-boycotts-2025july2\/?embed=1\" class=\"\">letter to campus chancellors<\/a>&nbsp;Wednesday,&nbsp;Drake summed up his message, couched in legal language, that UC campuses&nbsp;\u2014 including student governments&nbsp;\u2014 \u201cdo not engage in financial boycotts of companies associated with a particular country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No UC campus is boycotting products or associations with Israel, although several student governments and other student organizations have called for their campuses to divest from companies that do business with Israel. UC Berkeley\u2019s student government passed such a bill in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Drake\u2019s letter framed the ban as a sound business policy that does nothing to impinge on freedom of speech and linked to a\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/policy.ucop.edu\/doc\/3220485\/BFB-BUS-43\">2021 UC policy requiring competitive bidding<\/a>\u00a0in contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile our community members have the right to express their viewpoints, financial boycotts are inconsistent with UC\u2019s commitment to sound business practices, academic freedom and the free exchange of ideas,\u201d the university said in a separate statement that also linked to the policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Student leaders with the UC Student Association did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations called the ban \u201cdeeply troubling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oussama Mokeddem, the group\u2019s government affairs director, said the directive \u201csends a chilling message that financial interests and political pressure outweigh free expression and moral responsibility to take a stand against a foreign nation committing a genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March, the Department of Justice announced that it was including all&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/california\/article\/justice-department-uc-investigation-antisemitism-20204808.php\" class=\"\">UC campuses<\/a>&nbsp;in its expanding investigation of alleged antisemitism on campuses across the country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the nation\u2019s Jewish community is united in its opposition to anti-Jewish discrimination, groups are divided about how the Trump administration has handled its crackdown. Some welcome the attention to combating antisemitism. But others, such as the Nexus Project, which identifies as an \u201cantisemitism watchdog,\u201d accuse the Trump administration of exploiting \u201cfalse accusations of antisemitism for political gain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dan Mogulof, a spokesperson for Lyons, said the UC Berkeley chancellor is looking forward to telling the congressional committee \u201chow the campus has been investing, and continues to invest, in resources and programs designed to prevent and address antisemitism on the Berkeley campus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/author\/nanette-asimov\/\">Nanette Asimov<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HIGHER EDUCATION REPORTER<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nanette covers California&#8217;s public universities &#8211; the University of California and California State University &#8211; as well as community colleges and private universities.
