In the lead up to the New York City Democratic mayoral primary, the New York Times<\/em> editorial board refused to endorse democratic socialist candidate, and eventual landslide winner, Zohran Mamdani<\/strong>. The Times<\/em> said he did not deserve a spot<\/a> on New Yorkers\u2019 ballots and even suggested former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo<\/strong> would be better for the city\u2019s future. In the wake of Mamdani\u2019s primary victory, the Times<\/em> ran a ridiculous piece<\/a> about the candidate\u2019s college application, based on hacked documents provided to them by a far-right source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this \u2018Mehdi Unfiltered\u2019 interview, Mehdi <\/strong>speaks with Bill de Blasio<\/strong>, the former Democratic mayor of New York City, about the negative and \u201cinsane\u201d<\/strong> media coverage of his party\u2019s mayoral primary winner. \u201cI think there’s just a profound elitism and disconnect from the life of the city that’s pervading the editorial board at the <\/strong>Times<\/strong><\/em>,\u201d <\/strong>de Blasio says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI thought it showed basically a neoconservative bent that has become more and more evident in the<\/strong> Times <\/strong><\/em>editorial board,\u201d <\/strong>he continues. \u201cAnd it’s shocking to me as someone who grew up believing the <\/strong>Times<\/strong><\/em> as a liberal sort of bulwark in the world of journalism.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

De Blasio also defends Mamdani from criticisms of antisemitism, stating plainly that \u201che is not an antisemite,\u201d <\/strong>and describes his progressive policy agenda as \u201cperfectly viable.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think he has been put in the same box I was put in, but with Islamophobia added on top and fear of someone who calls themselves a socialist,\u201d<\/strong> the former mayor tells Mehdi.  \u201cHis ideas respond to the moment and the idea that the alternative idea, of accepting the status quo, is the truly insane proposition.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

De Blasio is also highly critical of top elected Democrats who supported Andrew Cuomo. \u201cIt is painful to think about people who I thought had a conscience\u2026 I was particularly shocked with Senator Gillibrand who, you know, made a name for herself addressing issues of sexual harassment and sexual abuse, but could not remember what Andrew Cuomo had done to 13 women.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
