cancellation of &#8220;The Late Show with Stephen Colbert&#8221; on Thursday\u2014suggesting that the decision to end the show&#8217;s 32-year run wasn&#8217;t driven by finances but by &#8220;political reasons.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement from&nbsp;<em>CBS<\/em>&nbsp;executives came just three days after Colbert spoke out on his show about a recent $16 million&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/paramount-settles-trump-lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">settlement<\/a>&nbsp;reached by&nbsp;<em>CBS<\/em>&nbsp;parent company Paramount over an interview that &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; aired with former Vice President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/kamala-harris\">Kamala Harris<\/a>&nbsp;ahead of the 2024 election, in which Harris ran against President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Colbert had told his audience that the settlement appeared to be a &#8220;big fat bribe&#8221; to end a &#8220;nuisance lawsuit.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This all comes as Paramount&#8217;s owners are trying to the get the Trump administration to approve the sale of our network to a new owner,&#8221; said Colbert, referring to a pending $8.4 billion merger with the entertainment company Skydance\u2014whose billionaire founder, David Ellison, has been spotted with Trump in recent months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Warren (D-Mass.) said Thursday that the public &#8220;deserves to know if [Colbert&#8217;s] show was canceled for political reasons.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">CBS canceled Colbert\u2019s show just THREE DAYS after Colbert called out CBS parent company Paramount for its $16M settlement with Trump \u2013 a deal that looks like bribery.<br><br>America deserves to know if his show was canceled for political reasons.<br><br>Watch and share his message. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Rz7HcWFLYM\">pic.twitter.com\/Rz7HcWFLYM<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenWarren\/status\/1946003619821580369?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 18, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-cbs-lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lawsuit<\/a>&nbsp;against Paramount claimed the Harris interview was deceptively edited and amounted to &#8220;partisan and unlawful acts of election and voter interference,&#8221; allegations that legal experts and First Amendment scholars denounced as &#8220;ridiculous&#8221; and &#8220;dangerous.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the settlement was announced earlier this month, with Paramount pledging to release transcripts of future &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; interviews with presidential candidates, one press freedom group&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/paramount-settles-trump-lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">condemned<\/a>&nbsp;the company for &#8220;capitulating&#8221; to the president&#8217;s demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>CBS<\/em>&nbsp;executives appeared to preemptively respond to expected allegations that they were canceling Colbert&#8217;s show due to his criticism of the settlement\u2014and his frequent rebukes of the president\u2014saying the decision, effective in May 2026, was &#8220;purely a financial&#8221; one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is not related in any way to the show&#8217;s performance, content, or other matters happening at Paramount,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/bernie-sanders\">Bernie Sanders<\/a>\u00a0(I-Vt.) expressed doubt that the end of Colbert&#8217;s show, days after he spoke out against his parent company&#8217;s legal decision, was &#8220;a coincidence.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BernieSanders\/status\/1946220710168289457?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1946220710168289457%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fcbs-late-night\">https:\/\/x.com\/BernieSanders\/status\/1946220710168289457?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1946220710168289457%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fcbs-late-night<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Media critics joined lawmakers including Sanders and Warren in expressing skepticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;&#8216;The Late Show&#8217; isn&#8217;t dying because people stopped watching late-night TV,&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/198120\/stephen-colbert-cancellation-ellison-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;Parker Molloy at<em>&nbsp;The New Republic<\/em>. &#8220;It&#8217;s being murdered because Stephen Colbert spent the last decade being one of Trump&#8217;s most persistent critics on network television, and the billionaires about to take over&nbsp;<em>CBS<\/em>&nbsp;need Trump&#8217;s approval for their merger.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anonymous &#8220;Late Show&#8221; staffers also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/stephen-colbert-canceled-cbs-staff-trump-shakedown-b2791693.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;<em>The Independent&nbsp;<\/em>they believed the cancellation of the show was &#8220;part and parcel of the Trump shakedown settlement.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Political scientist Norman Ornstein&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NormOrnstein\/status\/1946015544043327957\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called<\/a>&nbsp;the impending end of &#8220;The Late Show,&#8221; considering the surrounding circumstances, &#8220;a terrible sign for democracy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s only one reason to do this, and we know what it is,&#8221; said Ornstein. &#8220;The same reason that this disgraceful excuse for a network succumbed to blackmail from Trump over the &#8217;60 Minutes&#8217; interview.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump, whose Federal Communications Commission is still deciding on approval of the merger, weighed in on Friday regarding the show&#8217;s cancellation,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/media\/5408187-donald-trump-cbs-cancellation-late-show-stephen-colbert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saying<\/a>&nbsp;in a social media post, &#8220;I absolutely love that Colbert got fired,&#8221; and criticizing other late-night comedians who have taken aim at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As&nbsp;<em>Status News<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.status.news\/p\/skydance-colbert-stewart-ellison\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;after the Paramount settlement was announced, speculation has increased that comedian Jon Stewart, who co-hosts &#8220;The Daily Show&#8221;\u2014where Colbert spent several years\u2014could also &#8220;soon be silenced&#8221; after publicly criticizing the settlement. That show airs on Comedy Central, which is owned by the&nbsp;<em>CBS<\/em>&nbsp;parent company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Inside &#8216;The Daily Show,&#8217; I&#8217;m told staffers have taken pride that Stewart showed once again he is willing to stand up to powerful interests, even if it potentially risks his future employment,&#8221; wrote Oliver Darcy. &#8220;And while they may not yet know it, inside certain power circles, there is an open question: How much longer will Stewart have this platform?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>MSNBC<\/em>\u00a0anchor Chris Hayes\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/chrislhayes\/status\/1946233382607765756\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>\u00a0Friday that it is not &#8220;an overstatement to say that the test of a free society is whether or not comedians can make fun of the country&#8217;s leader on TV without repurcussions.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
