The new list,&nbsp; released Tuesday, narrows that number to 18, including three cities and two counties in California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A U.S. Department of Justice press release said it has filed lawsuits against sanctuary jurisdictions in past months \u201cto compel compliance with federal law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Berkeley\u2019s Sanctuary City Task Force has been working to protect the city\u2019s immigrant community through \u201cinformation sharing\u201d and \u201ccoordinated responses,\u201d said Berkeley Mayor Adena Ishii in a statement. Berkeley has also taken legal action by joining a coalition of cities suing the federal government over threats to withdraw funding from sanctuary cities, according to Ishii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s no surprise that we are still on the list. Berkeley continues to take pride in our status as a sanctuary city and we won&#8217;t be bullied into abandoning our values,\u201d Ishii said in the statement. \u201cIt is, in fact, the federal government that is causing harm and trauma in our communities, not cities such as ours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Berkeley City Council reaffirmed Berkeley\u2019s status as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailycal.org\/news\/city\/city-government\/city-council-reaffirms-berkeley-a-sanctuary-city-provides-homeownership-opportunities\/article_efbce76e-d955-11ef-8ae5-83dd6974519b.html\">sanctuary city<\/a>&nbsp;earlier in January. This decision came amidst the Trump administration\u2019s threats of mass deportations and plans to rescind restrictions on Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, arrests, according to the council\u2019s Jan. 21 resolution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under Berkeley\u2019s Sanctuary City Policy, city staff and agencies may not use public resources to assist with federal immigration enforcement \u201cunless legally required to do so,\u201d according to a letter from Berkeley\u2019s Rent Stabilization Board executive director D\u00e9Seana Williams. This policy also ensures that a tenant or resident\u2019s immigration status does not diminish their ability to access city services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, city staff are \u201cprohibited\u201d from sharing an individual\u2019s immigration status with ICE unless mandated by federal law, while city employees are instructed to not cooperate with ICE officials \u201cunless presented with a valid judicial warrant and after legal review.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ishii added that the council intends to \u201cput forward an ordinance\u201d soon to codify its sanctuary status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are not backing down,\u201d Ishii said in the statement. \u201cBerkeley is committed to remaining a safe space for all who live, work, and visit here.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Berkeley is one of 18 on a federal list of sanctuary cities targeted by President Donald Trump\u2019s administration.&nbsp; An initial list, released May 29, listed more than 500 \u201csanctuary jurisdictions\u201d which the Trump administration alleged hindered immigration enforcement, according to AP News.
