Heumann House after the disability rights advocate and Berkeley School of Public Health alumnus.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailycal.org\/users\/profile\/Agranya%20Ketha\">Agranya Ketha | Staff<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Construction for student housing at the People\u2019s Park site is advancing into its next phase as the last steel beams marking the top floors of the structure were added early this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following name proposal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailycal.org\/news\/city\/housing\/uc-berkeley-seeks-community-input-to-name-new-people-s-park-residence-hall\/article_eccb09e6-f282-11ef-a5e0-67589cf3035d.html\">submissions<\/a>&nbsp;from the community, the student housing project will be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailycal.org\/archives\/leader-of-the-disability-movement-uc-berkeley-alumnus-judy-heumann-dies-at-75\/article_a68c84e1-75a0-5bf0-8d64-ee2f46eed5ef.html\">named<\/a>&nbsp;the Judith E. Heumann House, after the disability rights advocate and Berkeley School of Public Health alumnus, according to Berkeley News on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cHeumann House\u201d will house 1,100 undergraduate students, with rooms being built to accommodate people with disabilities, a message Heumann championed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The construction will now shift to the exterior of the structure, as well as the mechanical and electrical installation, according to&nbsp;Berkeley News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This next step of construction is planned for completion mid-December this year, according to a July 31 project update. The entire housing project is expected to be completed to accommodate students for fall 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven after they&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailycal.org\/news\/campus\/uc-berkeley-launches-midnight-fencing-at-people-s-park-with-heavy-police-presence\/article_3a890826-aadc-11ee-a2da-1b13fbe0c22a.html\">put up<\/a>&nbsp;the shipping containers, which was Jan. 3, 2024, it was kind of vague,\u201d said community member and Southside resident Lisa Teague. \u201cBut this is really real. It\u2019s more than halfway done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Teague \u2014 who has also been an activist with the People\u2019s Park movement \u2014 one continuing impact on nearby residents is the noise of the construction, which has caused Teague to file complaints to the city. Teague noted that when they first complained, noise settled down for approximately one or two weeks, before the noise levels returned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the July 31 campus project update, installation work was to be limited to evening hours \u201cin order to minimize impacts on nearby residences and businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been noisy early in the morning all summer long,\u201d said community member and People\u2019s Park activist Ian Hunt. \u201cThere is the giant, \u2018Beep beep beep,\u2019 trucks, cement water, there\u2019s been all kinds of noise, pile driving. There\u2019s all kinds of noise and disruption.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Unit 2 resident Natalie Arias, the construction sounds wake her up in the morning and she says the noise is \u201cloudest in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another Unit 2 resident, Steve Lee, said he isn\u2019t bothered by the noise, noting he hears the sounds in the morning but it isn\u2019t \u201ctoo hard\u201d for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe work that\u2019s going to be done from now on is not going to be as intrusive as it has been,\u201d Teague said. \u201cThere will be noise, but it\u2019s (not) going to be quite as intense.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Construction for student housing at the People\u2019s Park site is advancing into its next phase as the last steel beams marking the top floors of the structure were added early this month.
