The feature itself allows any smartphone owner watch an immersive video where you can pan around your phone as if you were actually there. How would the <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Great Leader<\/em> react to such a provocation?<\/p>\n<p id=\"525b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">January 6, 2016 (8 weeks later):<\/strong> <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_nuclear_weapons_tests_of_North_Korea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_nuclear_weapons_tests_of_North_Korea\">North Korea held its first nuclear test after three years<\/a> claiming they have initiated the testing phase for a thermonuclear weapon considered among the most dangerous known to mankind: the <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thermonuclear_weapon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thermonuclear_weapon\">H-Bomb<\/a>. While one aims to split the atom in order to instill fear, the other one multiplies the bits to anticipate behavior. The dialectical relation between force and intelligence. The unapologetic brilliant hacker that Mark Zuckerberg once was, now tours the United States to rethink the role of Facebook in the formation of what he calls a <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">global community<\/em> by meeting with political and industry leaders while running a corporation that has become much more than another site on the web.<\/p>\n<p id=\"fc5a\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Recently, Zuckerberg outlined his vision for the company in a long, quite controversial manifesto. The text emerges in a special context: <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Facebook is accused of hosting an epidemic of <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">fake news<\/em> due to blind algorithms<\/strong> that got played with smart use of data that targeted every demographic in America with the perfect fake article on either Clinton or Trump, benefitting the latter. A shadow strategy that certainly helped elect as president a man who seems determinate to take measures to make the world less \u201copen and connected\u201d.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4b8d\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">The whole <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/notes\/mark-zuckerberg\/building-global-community\/10103508221158471\/?pnref=story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/notes\/mark-zuckerberg\/building-global-community\/10103508221158471\/?pnref=story\">6,000 words manifesto<\/a> is pretty much summarized here:<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"984d\" class=\"graf graf--pullquote graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--p\"><p>\u201cHistory is the story of how we\u2019ve learned to come together in ever greater numbers\u200a\u2014\u200afrom tribes to cities to nations. At each step, we built social infrastructure like communities, media and governments to empower us to achieve things we couldn\u2019t on our own. Today we are close to taking our next\u00a0step.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"e470\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--pullquote\">That next step is obviously Facebook, where 1.8 billion people gather every day producing the largest group under a centralized administration in history.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"2085\" class=\"graf graf--figure graf-after--p\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder is-locked\">\n<div class=\"progressiveMedia js-progressiveMedia graf-image is-canvasLoaded is-imageLoaded\" data-image-id=\"1*Z0dSllNDsWk4CYlBc1iFFg.png\" data-width=\"1696\" data-height=\"706\" data-focus-x=\"19\" data-focus-y=\"17\" data-action=\"zoom\" data-action-value=\"1*Z0dSllNDsWk4CYlBc1iFFg.png\" data-scroll=\"native\"><canvas class=\"progressiveMedia-canvas js-progressiveMedia-canvas\" width=\"75\" height=\"30\"><\/canvas><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"progressiveMedia-image js-progressiveMedia-image\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/800\/1*Z0dSllNDsWk4CYlBc1iFFg.png\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/800\/1*Z0dSllNDsWk4CYlBc1iFFg.png\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"imageCaption\">Identity providers ranked by population size.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"fc6b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">Mark Zuckerberg insists in talking about his company as \u201csocial infrastructure\u201d for the global community, meaning he intends to replace many existing institutional roles\u200a\u2014\u200alike preventing crime and suicide or finding terrorists\u200a\u2014\u200awith a single platform. Beyond Zuckerberg\u2019s curious and ambiguous use of the trendy term <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">infrastructure<\/em>, we highlight the important dimensions in which these instruments of community-shaping could endanger our freedom and personal sovereignty.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"369e\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--p\">Facebook as government means Facebook as the\u00a0police.<\/h4>\n<p id=\"e568\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">We must take into consideration that Facebook is building a global community run by a platform that among other features has, by design:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"1af6\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\">Facial recognition.<\/li>\n<li id=\"cd87\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Access to your private chats.<\/li>\n<li id=\"edc5\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Knowledge of who you privately stalk while browsing their site.<\/li>\n<li id=\"0919\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Records of who went to which event (and with whom).<\/li>\n<li id=\"ae86\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Ability to censor and curate information (even without users realizing it: shadow banned content can\u2019t be detected).<\/li>\n<li id=\"d2f4\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Proliferation of fake news &amp; filter bubbles.<\/li>\n<li id=\"0a7a\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">A record of <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/06\/30\/technology\/facebook-tinkers-with-users-emotions-in-news-feed-experiment-stirring-outcry.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/06\/30\/technology\/facebook-tinkers-with-users-emotions-in-news-feed-experiment-stirring-outcry.html?_r=0\">experimenting with user\u2019s emotions<\/a> and more means for surveillance than we can know of.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"46ff\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li\">Many human rights defenders are starting to become aware and they already have a hard time fighting Facebook\u2019s current law enforcement rules. <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2016\/oct\/31\/facebook-human-rights-censorship-civil-rights-mark-zuckerberg-aclu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2016\/oct\/31\/facebook-human-rights-censorship-civil-rights-mark-zuckerberg-aclu\">ACLU and other organizations recently sent the company a letter<\/a> stating:<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"0922\" class=\"graf graf--blockquote graf-after--p\"><p>We are deeply concerned with the recent cases of Facebook censoring human rights documentation, particularly content that depicts police violence.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"2c0f\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--blockquote\">And Facebook has been quick to <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/facebook.github.io\/react\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/facebook.github.io\/react\/\">react<\/a>:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"8bcd\" class=\"graf graf--figure graf--iframe graf-after--p\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder is-locked\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"imageCaption\">But how can they be really held accountable?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"49b5\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">Profiling is an ability Facebook has due to the tons of data captured from its users as they develop a company that has 97% of its revenue coming from advertising. By tracking behavior and operating as a digital passport on the web, Facebook optimizes the messaging from those organizations that invest their money on shaping desire and opinion. And although engineers working at Facebook\u2019s big data team are forbidden to make queries to their internal database connecting more than two data points (they will get immediately get fired according to their contract), <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">it is still a byproduct of Facebook\u2019s <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">attention farm <\/em>the possibility of generating racial, religious and ideological registries even without willing to pursue such goal.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"08c0\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure graf--trailing\"><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\" data-creator-ids=\"anon\">To understand <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">code is law<\/em> is also to understand the need to prevent code from becoming <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">the law<\/em><\/span>, because a program can\u2019t be bargained with. It can\u2019t be reasoned with. It doesn\u2019t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. An automated system might seem like a good substitute for corruptible, fallible human beings, but\u200a\u2014\u200aas the story of <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2002\/mar\/29\/humanities.highereducation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2002\/mar\/29\/humanities.highereducation\">IBM helping Nazi Germany<\/a> with the registry of Jews during the Holocaust\u2014 has also proven the most effective way to bring about massive torture and murders. In simpler words: to leave security and law enforcement duties to Facebook\u2019s algorithms can be dangerous.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"section section--body section--last\">\n<div class=\"section-content\">\n<div class=\"section-inner sectionLayout--insetColumn\">\n<h3 id=\"0d87\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf--leading\">Achieving Personal Sovereignty.<\/h3>\n<p id=\"597c\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">Sir Tim Berners-Lee, known for having invented the world wide web, has recently stated <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2017\/mar\/11\/tim-berners-lee-web-inventor-save-internet?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Facebook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2017\/mar\/11\/tim-berners-lee-web-inventor-save-internet?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Facebook\">the top three most pressing issues he considers need to be addressed in order to keep the internet open and free<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"2639\" class=\"graf graf--li graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">\u201cWe\u2019ve lost control of our personal data\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li id=\"edc8\" class=\"graf graf--li graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--li\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">\u201cIt\u2019s too easy for misinformation to spread on the web\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li id=\"25da\" class=\"graf graf--li graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--li\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">\u201cPolitical advertising online needs transparency and understanding\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p id=\"6841\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li\">None of this goals can be fixed through the means of traditional software development. There is nothing in the development stack of Facebook that can guarantee the promise of solving these issues because at its core, the problem can be described with a single concept: <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">data centralization<\/em>. The very same strategy used by autocratic regimes Hence, <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/bitcoin.com\/bitcoin.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"http:\/\/bitcoin.com\/bitcoin.pdf\">the rise of new protocols of trust like blockchains<\/a> that can operate under <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">decentralized<\/em> information networks can guarantee users that no single corporation or entity is acting as <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">big brother.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"32d4\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">When abstracted, <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">the main interactions we have on a daily basis with Facebook are exactly the same ones that we have with our government<\/strong>: Identity, voting (<em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">liking<\/em>) and representation. What happens if we settle these interactions on a public decentralized information architecture such as a blockchain?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-inner sectionLayout--fullWidth\">\n<figure id=\"a082\" class=\"graf graf--figure graf--layoutFillWidth graf-after--p\" data-scroll=\"native\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder is-locked\">\n<div class=\"progressiveMedia js-progressiveMedia graf-image is-canvasLoaded is-imageLoaded\" data-image-id=\"1*7t6aZmPllOVaW85TMJd2wg.png\" data-width=\"3409\" data-height=\"618\" data-scroll=\"native\"><canvas class=\"progressiveMedia-canvas js-progressiveMedia-canvas\" width=\"75\" height=\"12\"><\/canvas><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"progressiveMedia-image js-progressiveMedia-image\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/2000\/1*7t6aZmPllOVaW85TMJd2wg.png\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/2000\/1*7t6aZmPllOVaW85TMJd2wg.png\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"imageCaption\">Democracy Earth Foundation\u2019s plan with <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--figure-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/sovereign.software\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"http:\/\/sovereign.software\">Sovereign<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-inner sectionLayout--insetColumn\">\n<p id=\"0535\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\">At <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/democracy.earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"http:\/\/democracy.earth\">Democracy Earth Foundation<\/a> we believe that what open source did for software, blockchains will do for institutions. The interactions that are now held inside the<em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\"> walled (feudal?) garden<\/em> of Facebook, as they become a more relevant geopolitical factor driving modern society, need to migrate towards a public commons that shall aim to include every voice in the planet while <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@piamancini\/future-scenarios-for-algorithmic-accountability-and-governance-17cd436d22a0#.qmf1m3bwi\" target=\"_blank\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@piamancini\/future-scenarios-for-algorithmic-accountability-and-governance-17cd436d22a0#.qmf1m3bwi\">guaranteeing algorithmic accountability<\/a>. When software becomes decentralized, sovereignty is what gets transferred to the users.
