Outrage over Spotify running advertisements<\/a> for US Immigration<\/a> and Customs Enforcement ramped up on Tuesday, with the progressive advocacy group Indivisible urging users to cancel their subscriptions until the ICE<\/a> ads are removed, engage in peaceful protests<\/a> outside the streaming giant\u2019s offices and events, and call on artists to boycott the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aiming to deliver on President Donald Trump\u2019s campaign promise of mass deportations<\/a>, the US Department of Homeland Security<\/a> (DHS) this summer launched<\/a> an ICE recruitment campaign, with incentives including a $50,000 signing bonus, student loan repayment and forgiveness options, enhanced retirement benefits, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With 276 million subscribers<\/a> and 696 million monthly active users last quarter, Spotify is the world\u2019s largest streaming service. Earlier this month, a Spotify spokesperson told<\/a> The Indepedent<\/em> that the ads encouraging listeners to \u201cjoin the mission to protect America\u201d and \u201cfulfill your mission\u201d by applying to become an ICE agent do not violate the company\u2019s advertising policies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spokesperson added that the ads are \u201cpart of a broad campaign the US government is running across television, streaming, and online channels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The British outlet noted that \u201cthey mirror similar advertising that has been seen on cable television, X, YouTube<\/a>, LinkedIn<\/a>, and Meta<\/a>,\u201d and subscribers to ESPN<\/em>, HBO Max, Hulu, and Pandora have also complained of encountering ICE ads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Trump\u2019s anti-migrant rampage continued in Chicago<\/a> and other cities across the country on Tuesday, Indivisible sent out an email with the subject line: \u201cDon\u2019t stream fascism<\/a>. Cancel Spotify.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019re choosing complicity over the artists, podcasters, and fans who make Spotify what it is\u2014and when users and musicians called them out, Spotify\u2019s first act was doubling down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut we\u2019re not going to idly accept that. We\u2019re going to make them listen,\u201d the email continues, pointing to the boycott<\/a> of Disney in September, after the Trump administration\u2019s bullying briefly got Jimmy Kimmel\u2019s late-night show yanked<\/a> off of ABC<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indivisible also published a video tutorial<\/a> for canceling a Spotify premium account and a webpage<\/a> with its demands for the company\u2019s founder and chief executive, Daniel Ek, as well as incoming co-CEOs Gustav S\u00f6derstr\u00f6m and Alex Norstr\u00f6m:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
