Andrew M. Cuomo,\u201d the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/new-york\">New York<\/a>&nbsp;Times&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/11\/06\/nyregion\/mamdani-agenda-nonprofit.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;Thursday. The newspaper noted Mamdani\u2019s comments about the group during a press conference earlier this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI will always celebrate anyone who is looking to build on the incredible, amazing grassroots enthusiasm of our campaign,\u201d he said. \u201cThis work was not simply to win an election but transform our city, and that means it has to continue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sunraysunray\/status\/1986507745416347942?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1986507745416347942%7Ctwgr%5Ee9c6903a5bf6885252f80f2c7e93cab79da379a0%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fmamdani-wins\">https:\/\/x.com\/sunraysunray\/status\/1986507745416347942?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1986507745416347942%7Ctwgr%5Ee9c6903a5bf6885252f80f2c7e93cab79da379a0%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fmamdani-wins<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mamdani \u201calso encouraged supporters to join the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/new-york-city\">New York City<\/a>&nbsp;chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, his political home,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/(He%20also%20encouraged%20supporters%20to%20join%20the%20New%20York%20City%20chapter%20of%20the%20Democratic%20Socialists%20of%20America,%20his%20political%20home.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a>&nbsp;<em>City &amp; State New York<\/em>. Our Time\u2019s leadership has ties to the NYC-DSA, which played a key role in mobilizing support for Mamdani during the campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our Time\u2019s site names five people leading the organization: executive director Jeremy Freeman, field manager Magdalena Mora\u0144da, senior adviser Susan Kang, and board members David Turner and Batul Hassan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to channel the energy of a volunteer base towards winning the affordability agenda, and doing so at this scale is unprecedented in New York City history,\u201d Freeman told the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>. \u201cIn developing the organization, we\u2019re looking carefully at past examples both positive and negative, and we\u2019ll certainly be sure to avoid the pitfalls of any similar efforts by past administrations, and we\u2019ll be as transparent as possible in our practices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group\u2019s creation has prompted comparisons to Our Revolution, which launched after the 2016 presidential run of Sen.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/bernie-sanders\">Bernie Sanders<\/a>&nbsp;(I-Vt.), one of Mamdani\u2019s most prominent supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some political observers have also framed it as what former Democratic President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/barack-obama\">Barack Obama<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2025\/11\/6\/2352500\/-Our-Time-Mamdani-team-not-repeating-Obama-s-greatest-error\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">should<\/a>&nbsp;have done after winning his first term.&nbsp;<em>The American Prospect<\/em>\u2018s executive editor, David Dayen,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ddayen\/status\/1986459769335652537\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>&nbsp;that \u201cthis is the opposite of what Obama did to his volunteer base after 2008.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s also the cautionary tale of former NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio\u2019s Campaign for One New York, which shut down in 2016 amid&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/campaign-for-one-new-york-shut-down-de-blasio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">alarm<\/a>&nbsp;over its finances, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/states\/new-york\/city-hall\/story\/2016\/07\/campaign-for-one-new-york-raised-from-real-estate-through-february-this-year-103899\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">donations<\/a>&nbsp;from entities that had business before or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/labor\">labor<\/a>&nbsp;contracts with City Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our Time is \u201ca fully independent organization,\u201d and it is \u201cnot asking for dues or formal membership,\u201d the group\u2019s site says. \u201cWe are accepting donations from individuals, foundations, and other philanthropic organizations. All donations greater than $1,000 will be disclosed publicly on our website.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freeman told the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;that the group will not be accepting money from corporations or firms with business before the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur victory was historic, but the campaign for an affordable New York City is just beginning,\u201d Our Time\u2019s site says. \u201cEven as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/billionaires\">billionaires<\/a>&nbsp;have made their opposition clear, more than 100,000 volunteers helped win this election, and they want to keep going. Our Time can be a vehicle for continued engagement\u2014a way for folks to plug in and stay active while they find a long-term political home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group is coming together as Mamdani supporters, skeptics, and critics all wonder how much of his popular platform he\u2019ll actually be able to accomplish after the state assemblyman is sworn in as mayor next January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Time<\/em>&nbsp;on Tuesday&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7331036\/mamdani-nyc-mayor-election-campaign-promises\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published<\/a>&nbsp;a detailed look at the barriers Mamdani will face in his mission to deliver a rent freeze, more&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/affordable-housing\">affordable housing<\/a>, city-run grocery stores, fare-free buses, no-cost childcare, a higher&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/minimum-wage\">minimum wage<\/a>, and taxes targeting the 1%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRaising taxes would require approval from the Democratic-controlled state Legislature and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul,\u201d&nbsp;<em>Time<\/em>&nbsp;noted. \u201cHochul endorsed Mamdani but expressed fears that significant tax hikes would force wealthy residents out of the city, ultimately opposing his proposed tax increases.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Mamdani\u2019s Tuesday victory, longtime labor organizers Peter Olney and Rand Wilson&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/opinion\/work-after-mamdani-win\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;in an op-ed that during his four-year term, \u201cevery Republican and corporate Democrat will do everything possible to ensure he fails, to discredit his socialist platform.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAny success he achieves as mayor will be due to the strength of the movement that prevailed in the primary and continued to grow for his election in November,\u201d they stressed. \u201cIf that movement stays mobilized, continues to grow, and delivers for New York\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/working-class\">working class<\/a>, it will be an inspiring political model that our labor movement should support and attempt to replicate in other US metropolitan areas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
