President Donald Trump<\/a> is drafting an executive order aimed at rolling back voting rights<\/a>, a measure that may include attacks on mailed ballots, a top administration official said Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe White House<\/a> is working on an executive order to strengthen our elections in this country and to ensure that there cannot be blatant fraud, as we\u2019ve seen in California<\/a> with their universal mail-in voting system,\u201d Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLike any executive order, of course, any executive order the president signs is within his full executive authority and within the confines of the law,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked by a reporter what is her evidence of electoral fraud in California, Leavitt replied without evidence that \u201cit\u2019s just a fact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leavitt\u2019s remarks came hours after Trump baselessly attacked California\u2019s vote-by-mail system in a post<\/a> on his Truth Social network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Unconstitutional Redistricting Vote in California is a GIANT SCAM in that the entire process, in particular the Voting itself, is RIGGED,\u201d Trump alleged without evidence. \u201cAll \u2018Mail-In\u2019 Ballots, where the Republicans<\/a> in that State are \u2018Shut Out,\u2019 is under very serious legal and criminal review. STAY TUNED!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump has previously vowed<\/a> to ban mail-in ballots, a move legal experts say would be unconstitutional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The White House\u2019s announcement also came as Americans voted in several high-stakes elections, including California\u2019s Proposition 50<\/a> retaliatory redistricting proposal; the New York<\/a> City mayoral race<\/a> between progressive Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani<\/a>, disgraced former Gov. Andrew Cuomo<\/a>, and Republican Curtis Sliwa; gubernatorial races in New Jersey<\/a> and Virginia<\/a>; and a crowded contest for Minneapolis<\/a> mayor highlighted by democratic socialist state Sen. Omar Fateh\u2019s<\/a> (D-62) bid to unseat third-term Democratic Mayor Jacob Frey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement also followed a federal judge\u2019s permanent blocking<\/a> of part of Trump\u2019s executive order requiring proof of US citizenship on federal voter registration forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democracy<\/a> defenders have repudiated Trump\u2019s attacks on mailed ballots and claims of voter fraud\u2014a longtime right-wing<\/a> bugaboo unsupported<\/a> by facts on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVoting by mail as permitted by the laws of your state is legal,\u201d ACLU Voting Rights Project director Sophia Lin Lakin says in a statement <\/a>on the group\u2019s website <\/strong>about Trump\u2019s order from March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn his sweeping executive order, Trump tried to bully states into not counting ballots properly received after Election Day under state law by threatening to withhold federal funding,\u201d she continues. \u201cA federal court has temporarily blocked this part of the executive order.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTrump\u2019s effort to target mail-in voting is a blatant overreach, intruding on states\u2019 constitutional authority to set the rules for elections,\u201d Lin Lakin adds. \u201cIt threatens to disenfranchise tens of millions of eligible voters and would no doubt disproportionately impact historically excluded communities, including voters of color, naturalized citizens, people with disabilities, and the elderly, by pushing unnecessary barriers to the fundamental right to vote.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
