While nine firms agreed earlier this year to provide nearly $1 billion worth of free legal services to the administration in order to avoid litigation, Keker stood up to Trump and defended San Francisco\u2019s values on a national stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His firm issued a statement calling on others&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.keker.com\/news\/keker-van-nest-peters-responds-to-executive-order-preventing-abuses-of-the-legal-system-and-the-federal-court-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cto resist the [Trump administration\u2019s] erosion of the rule of law,\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;and he also penned an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/30\/opinion\/perkins-coie-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">editorial in The New York Times<\/a>&nbsp;alongside his law partners. Keker has remained a vocal critic of the administration\u2019s efforts since then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In doing so, Keker embodied The City\u2019s spirit: courageous, principled and unafraid to challenge power when the rule of law and decency are at stake. Before we began our interview, Keker pointed out a framed photograph hanging in his Jackson Square office of a young Nelson Mandela after being acquitted of treason in 1956 \u2014 a constant inspiration to keep fighting the good fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following conversation has been edited for length and clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What does being named a San Franciscan of the Year mean to you?<\/strong>&nbsp;I was obviously picked on athletic ability, and I beat Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobhillgazette.com\/people\/the_interview\/catching-up-with-buster-posey\/article_94d6065d-5b4a-4b53-8101-af2732121318.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Buster Posey<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seriously, it\u2019s a great honor. I moved to San Francisco with my family in 1971 determined to stay here. When we first moved here, I had a public-defender job with a public-defender salary, and I needed $500 to pay the mover. I went to the Bank of America at Fisherman\u2019s Wharf to ask to borrow it, and the woman said, \u201cYou don\u2019t meet our criteria.\u201d And I started screaming and said, \u201cI\u2019m going to be somebody in this town someday, and I\u2019m going to bring down the Bank of America!\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Editor\u2019s Note:&nbsp;Meet the 2025 San Franciscans of the Year.&nbsp;Read all of The Examiner\u2019s profiles on the winners here.
