action over what they describe as the murder of their loved one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/new-york-times\">New York Times<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/11\/13\/world\/americas\/trump-drug-boat-strikes-colombian-fisherman.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;Thursday that the family of Alejandro Carranza \u201chas hired an American lawyer, who said he was preparing a legal claim.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RECOMMENDED&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a People<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The lawyer, Dan Kovalik, told the&nbsp;<em>Times&nbsp;<\/em>that the impending case is important both because \u201cthe family deserves compensation for the loss\u201d of Alejandro and, more broadly to stop the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/trump-administration\">Trump administration<\/a>&nbsp;from killing people with impunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want this case to help stop these killings from taking place again,\u201d Kovalik said. \u201cThis is murder, and it is destroying&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/rule-of-law\">rule of law<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The description of Carranza\u2019s killing as murder aligns with the views of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/un-experts-trump-venezuela\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Nations experts<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2025\/10\/u-s-airstrikes-in-latin-america-and-the-caribbean-are-murder-congress-must-stop-them-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">human rights advocates<\/a>&nbsp;who have characterized the Trump administration\u2019s bombings in international waters as extrajudicial killings. To date, the administration has carried out at least 19 strikes on vessels in international waters, killing an estimated 75-80 people in total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI never thought I would lose my father in this way,\u201d said Cheila Carranza, Alejandro\u2019s 14-year-old daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump has claimed, without providing any evidence, that the targeted vessels were smuggling drugs to the US. Though his body has yet to be found, Carranza is believed to have been killed in an attack in the Caribbean on September 15, part of the Trump administration\u2019s broader military campaign and buildup in the region that has sparked fears of a direct&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/us-venezuela-military-standoff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">US war with Venezuela<\/a>&nbsp;and other nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The attack infuriated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/colombia\">Colombia<\/a>&nbsp;President Gustavo Petro, who suspended intelligence cooperation with the US in response and accused the Trump administration of trampling&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/international-law\">international law<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf intelligence communications only serve to kill fishermen with missiles, it is not only irrational, but a crime against humanity, insofar as the murder of civilians is systematic,\u201d Petro&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/petrogustavo\/status\/1988760975743545693\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;in a lengthy&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/social-media\">social media<\/a>&nbsp;post earlier this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cColombia respects international law and defends it because it is the only wall we have as a human civilization against the barbarism that threatens to take over all of humanity,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
