Photo by Mariana Garcia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>District 1 Supervisor Connie Chan announced on Thursday that she is running for Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi\u2019s seat as the San Francisco member of the U.S. House of Representatives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSan Francisco has always belonged to the people \u2014 not the powerful. And people in our city are struggling. Families are hurt by high costs, communities are devastated by Trump policies,\u201d Chan wrote in a press release announcing her run.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cI\u2019m running for Congress to build coalitions, build up our communities and bring our voices to Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chan has served as the supervisor for District 1, which covers Richmond, Sea Cliff and Presidio Terrace, since January 2021. She is up against&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/11\/scott-wiener-nancy-pelosi-saikat\/\">Scott Wiener<\/a>, the state senator for San Francisco, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/10\/pelosi-challenger-saikat-chakrabarti-launches\/\">Saikat Chakrabarti<\/a>, a former tech executive and former chief of staff to New York City Rep. Photo by Junyao Yang.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In her campaign&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?app=desktop&amp;v=gGpCFi8spU4\">launch video<\/a>, Chan sought to distinguish herself from her opponents with thinly veiled swipes at both Wiener and Chakrabarti: \u201cI\u2019m not a corporate Democrat. I didn\u2019t make money in tech. I\u2019m a working mom. I made lunch for my kid.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wiener has raised more than $1 million for his campaign so far, according to campaign finance filings, and much of his giving comes from employees in the financial, insurance, and real estate sectors, according to&nbsp;<em>Calmatters<\/em>\u2019&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.digitaldemocracy.org\/legislators\/scott-wiener-100936#financials\">Digital Democracy project<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.backtothepicture.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.broadstreetads.com\/assets\/278cc7bd-fdea-4cea-b1cf-b8d2175b0646.png\" alt=\"Back to the Picture SR\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Chakrabarti became a centimillionaire as a founding engineer at Stripe. He has pledged to self-fund his campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"People - Connie Chan for Congress\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gGpCFi8spU4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In her video, Chan also took a stab at Wiener\u2019s stance on housing, vouching to \u201cbuild real affordable housing, not the Sacramento version that destroys our neighborhoods.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As state senator, Wiener, the godfather of the YIMBYs, has passed a number of policies to spur development, loosen zoning restrictions and put teeth into housing construction mandates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.valenciacyclery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.broadstreetads.com\/assets\/9d07c6db-0fba-4076-8647-cad623bd8409.png\" alt=\"Valencia Cyclery 62325\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Chan has taken a different approach: She has expressed concern about how those same laws could change San Francisco neighborhoods and potentially displace tenants and small businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most recently, she attempted to pass amendments to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/11\/sf-upzoning-housing-amendments\/\">exempt<\/a>&nbsp;existing housing stock from the mayor\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/10\/explore-how-will-sf-zoning-affect-your-neighborhood\/\">upzoning plan<\/a>. (Those amendments were not integrated into the plan, as they would have effectively gutted it and made it noncompliant with state requirements.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chan is a progressive politician who has strong ties with the city\u2019s major labor unions. In her November 2024 reelection campaign, a labor-backed political action committee spent handsomely to support her,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2024\/10\/labor-unions-sf-elections-district-1-connie-chan-marjan-philhour\/\">raising<\/a>&nbsp;more than $800,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usfca.edu\/arts-sciences\/programs\/graduate\/writing-mfa?utm_source=mission-local&amp;utm_medium=web&amp;utm_campaign=mfa-writing&amp;utm_content=apply\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.broadstreetads.com\/assets\/58f5fe07-8930-4586-a873-871c86d48a35.jpg\" alt=\"11\/1-11\/27\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That, and her&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2024\/11\/sf-election-analysis-money-cant-buy-you-competence\/\">opposition<\/a>&nbsp;to Prop. K, which removed cars from the Great Highway, were difference-makers in her supervisorial race. Wiener favored Prop. K.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her campaign launch video published on Thursday, Chan touted her record as supervisor. She highlighted a progressive-friendly list of accomplishments: Tenant protections, free Muni for youth, and raising wages for city workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pelosi, the retiring incumbent, endorsed Chan\u2019s campaign for supervisor in 2024. The two also worked together to pass Prop. 50 in 2025. The speaker emerita has not yet publicly offered an endorsement for her successor nor committed any campaign funds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rarefieldsf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.broadstreetads.com\/assets\/b21a33a9-ab44-4f87-9035-794c39963f45.png\" alt=\"Rarefield ad 8\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Chan was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to the United States at the age of 13.
