Backlash against the Trump administration\u2019s assault on immigrant communities\u2014in which some US citizens are also getting caught up\u2014is growing in Charlotte, North Carolina this week, as over 30,000 students staged walkouts to protest<\/a> the federal invasion, people rallied to condemn the arrest of day laborers, and communities mobilized to protect their friends and neighbors targeted by federal agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hundreds of people gathered outside the Home Depot on North Wendover Road Wednesday morning, lining both sides of the street, holding signs supporting immigrants and denouncing US Immigration<\/a> and Customs Enforcement (ICE<\/a>) and Border Patrol agents, and cheering as motorists honked in support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The protest came on the fifth\u2014and\u00a0reportedly penultimate<\/a>\u2014day of\u00a0Operation Charlotte\u2019s Web<\/a>, which the Department of Homeland Security\u00a0claimed<\/a>\u00a0targeted the \u201cworst of the worst criminal illegal aliens.\u201d The Mecklenburg County Sheriff\u2019s Office said Thursday that it has been informed by federal officials that Operation Charlotte\u2019s Web has wrapped up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The administration\u2019s \u201cworst of the worst\u201d claim does not seem supported in the vast majority of the hundreds of arrests made in the Charlotte area, as ICE and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP<\/a>) agents have targeted locations including a church<\/a>, grocery stores, construction sites, homes, and hardware store parking lots where day laborers gather every morning in search of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom guns being drawn on pedestrians, windows broken at restaurants and US citizens being detained and later released, it is clear that CBP\u2019s main mission is to disrupt public safety and everyday life in Charlotte,\u201d Zamara Saldivar of the Carolina Migrant Network told<\/a> WFAE<\/em> at the Home Depot protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protester Norm Perreault told the\u00a0Charlotte<\/em>\u00a0Observer<\/em>\u00a0that \u201cthey say they\u2019re deporting the worst of the worst, but day laborers are the best of the best.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
