Bringing a former president who assaulted&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/democracy\">democracy<\/a>&nbsp;to justice,\u201d filmmaker Petra Costa wrote on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/social-media\">social media<\/a>, as&nbsp;<em>The Guardian&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/nov\/22\/far-right-former-president-jair-bolsonaro-arrested-in-brazil?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brazilian&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/supreme-court\">Supreme Court<\/a>&nbsp;Justice Alexandre de Moraes&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brazil-bolsonaro-prison-arrest-d68ae43b99762c577efe7e6ba20b0542\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ordered<\/a>&nbsp;the arrest after discovering Bolsonaro\u2019s ankle monitor had been tampered with at 12:08 am local time Saturday. Bolsonaro\u2019s lawyers said that this was not the case, but Bolsonaro later admitted to taking a soldering iron to the device \u201cout of curiosity\u201d in a video released by the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t curiosity, it\u2019s a crime,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/renatasouzario\/status\/1992351231243657404\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>\u00a0State Deputy to the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro Renata da Silva Souza, on social\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/media\">media<\/a>. \u201cBolsonaro is not a victim: He is convicted, ineligible, and is IMPRISONED. Turning this absurdity into a justification is a mockery of Brazilian democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/status\/1992351231243657404\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The ex-president\u2019s arrest also came the same day that his son Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro had planned a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/protest\">protest<\/a>&nbsp;outside the Brasilia condo where Bolsonaro has been living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De Moraes said Bolsonaro\u2019s tampering with his monitor fed his suspicions that he would attempt to flee the country in \u201cthe confusion that would be caused by a demonstration organized by his son,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brazil-bolsonaro-prison-arrest-d68ae43b99762c577efe7e6ba20b0542\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a>&nbsp;<em>The Associated Press.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe is located about 13 kilometers (8 miles) away from where the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/united-states\">United States<\/a>&nbsp;of America embassy lies, in a distance that can be covered in a 15-minute drive,\u201d de Moraes added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump, who has sanctioned de Moraes and supports Bolsonaro, reacted to news of the arrest by saying it was \u201ctoo bad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bolsonaro was arrested around 6:00 am local time and is now detained in an approximately 130-square-foot room in the federal police headquarters in Brasilia,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/brazil-ex-president-bolsonaro-arrested-by-federal-police-source-says-2025-11-22\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a>&nbsp;<em>Reuters.&nbsp;<\/em>The entire five-judge panel that originally sentenced Bolsonaro will review his detention on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Institutional Relations Minister Gleisi Hoffmann was the highest-ranking member of the current government to comment on the detention, according to&nbsp;<em>Reuters<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hoffmann&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/gleisi\/status\/1992247498040131985\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;on social media:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>The pretrial detention of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/jair-bolsonaro\">Jair Bolsonaro<\/a>&nbsp;strictly follows the rites of due process of law, overseen by the Federal Supreme Court and the Attorney General\u2019s Office in each stage of the criminal action against the attempted coup d\u2019\u00e9tat in Brazil. The decision by Minister Alexandre de Moraes is grounded in the real risks of flight by the leader of the coup organization, as well as the imminent finality of his conviction for the serving of his sentence. It also rightly takes into account the background of a process marked by violent attempts to coerce the Judiciary, such as the tarifa\u00e7o and the Magnitsky&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/sanctions\">sanctions<\/a>.
