Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) holds a news conference with fellow senators on October 29, 2025 in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0(Photo by Chip Somodevilla\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cSo glad there are some Senate Dems willing to fight back,\u201d said one progressive strategist.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/jake-johnson\">Jake Johnson<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nov 25, 2025 (CommonDreams.org)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Angered by the Democratic leadership\u2019s fecklessness and lack of a bold vision for the future, a group of senators including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/bernie-sanders\">Bernie Sanders<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/vermont\">Vermont<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/elizabeth-warren\">Elizabeth Warren<\/a>&nbsp;of Massachusetts has formed an alliance to push back on Senate Minority Leader&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/chuck-schumer\">Chuck Schumer<\/a>&nbsp;and the party\u2019s campaign arm ahead of next year\u2019s critical&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/midterm-elections\">midterm elections<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The existence of the group, known as the \u201cFight Club,\u201d was first revealed Monday by the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/new-york-times\">New York Times<\/a><\/em>, which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/11\/24\/us\/politics\/schumer-democrats-senate-fight-club.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;that the senators are pressing the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/democratic-party\">Democratic Party<\/a>&nbsp;to \u201cembrace candidates willing to challenge entrenched corporate interests, fiercely oppose the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/trump-administration\">Trump administration<\/a>, and defy their own party\u2019s orthodoxy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RECOMMENDED&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/schumer-jeffries-primary-challenges\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/house-minority-leader-hakeem-jeffries.jpg?id=61097777&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=80&amp;coordinates=170%2C0%2C171%2C0\" alt=\"House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries...\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/schumer-jeffries-primary-challenges\">Survey Shows Large Majority of Grassroots Democrats Back Primary Challenges for Schumer and Jeffries<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/when-is-schumer-up-for-reelection\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/senate-caucus-meetings.jpg?id=62129335&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=80&amp;coordinates=844%2C0%2C844%2C0\" alt=\"Senate Caucus Meetings\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/when-is-schumer-up-for-reelection\">\u2018Next Step Is Primaries\u2019: Calls for Schumer Ouster After Leading Shutdown Surrender<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sens. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, Tina Smith of Minnesota, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/chris-murphy\">Chris Murphy<\/a>&nbsp;of Connecticut are also members of the alliance, and other senators\u2014including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/ed-markey\">Ed Markey<\/a>&nbsp;of Massachusetts and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/jeff-merkley\">Jeff Merkley<\/a>&nbsp;of Oregon\u2014have taken part in group actions, according to the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe coalition of at least half a dozen senators&#8230; is unhappy with how Mr. Schumer and his fellow senator from New York,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/kirsten-gillibrand\">Kirsten Gillibrand<\/a>, the head of Senate Democrats\u2019 campaign arm, have chosen, recruited and, they argue, favored candidates aligned with the establishment,\u201d the newspaper reported. \u201cThe party\u2019s campaign arm, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, has not made any formal endorsements in contested primaries. However, the senators are convinced that it is quietly signaling support for and pushing donors toward specific Senate candidates: Rep. Angie Craig in Minnesota, Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan, and Gov. Janet Mills in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/maine\">Maine<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of the \u201cFight Club\u201d have endorsed Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan\u2019s bid for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/us-senate\">US Senate<\/a>. In addition to Flanagan, Sanders has backed Abdul El-Sayed\u2019s US Senate run in Michigan and Graham Platner\u2019s campaign to unseat Republican Sen.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/susan-collins\">Susan Collins<\/a>&nbsp;in Maine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Platner\u2019s top opponent in the primary race, Mills, was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/10\/14\/janet-mills-enters-crowded-maine-senate-race-00597876\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aggressively recruited<\/a>\u201d by Schumer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Courageous Leaders endorse Peggy Flanagan for US Senate\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/on6aPnm7Cuc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>News of the \u201cFight Club\u201d alliance comes after a small group of centrist Democrats, with Schumer\u2019s tacit blessing,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/democrats-cave-on-government-shutdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">capitulated<\/a>&nbsp;to President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/republicans\">Republicans<\/a>&nbsp;earlier this month by agreeing to end the government shutdown without an extension of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/affordable-care-act\">Affordable Care Act<\/a>&nbsp;subsidies, even as health insurance premiums skyrocket nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cave sparked widespread fury, much of it directed at Schumer. Indivisible, a progressive advocacy group that typically aligns with Democrats, has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/indivisible.org\/post\/3m5ctekxs6k2e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;it will not support any Senate Democratic primary candidate who does not call on Schumer to step down as minority leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe must turn the page on this era of cowardice,\u201d Indivisible said following Senate Democrats\u2019 capitulation. \u201cWe must nominate and elect Democratic candidates who have an actual backbone. And we must ensure that the kind of failed leadership we see from Sen. Schumer does not doom a future Democratic majority.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus far, no sitting member of the Senate Democratic caucus has demanded Schumer\u2019s resignation.
