Bernie Sanders Reintroduces The &quot;Medicare For All Act&quot;\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/medicare-for-all-popular\">Medicare for All Sees Key Polling Shift as Americans Fume Over Surging For-Profit Insurance Premiums<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-tax-cuts-retail-ceos\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/walmart-ceo-doug-mcmillon.jpg?id=62610252&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=833%2C0%2C834%2C0\" alt=\"Walmart CEO Doug McMillon\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-tax-cuts-retail-ceos\">As Wage Growth Slows and Unemployment Rises, Trump Tax Cuts Deliver Big for Mega-Rich Retail CEOs<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>Post<\/em>&nbsp;editorial board, led by opinion editor Adam O\u2019Neal, waves away&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/article\/2024\/may\/08\/nhs-underfunding-broken-equipment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expert analyses<\/a>&nbsp;showing that the UK government is underinvesting in its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/healthcare\">healthcare<\/a>&nbsp;system relative to other countries in Europe, resulting in the kinds of problems the Thursday editorial attributed to the supposedly inherent flaws of single-payer systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is the dark reality of single-payer and a cautionary tale for the third of Americans who mistakenly believe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/medicare\">Medicare<\/a>&nbsp;for All is a good idea,\u201d the editorial declared ominously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The editorial understates Medicare for All\u2019s popularity among US voters. A recent Data for Progress&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataforprogress.org\/blog\/2025\/11\/medicare-for-all-is-popular-even-when-put-up-against-attacks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey<\/a>&nbsp;found that even after hearing common opposing arguments, 58% of voters strongly or somewhat support improving Medicare and expanding it to cover everyone in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Our people-powered journalism cannot survive without you<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your support allows Common Dreams to continue covering the stories and amplifying the voices that the corporate media never will. US Rep.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/pramila-jayapal\">Pramila Jayapal<\/a>\u00a0(D-Wash.), the co-leader of the Medicare for All Act in the House, is\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/12\/18\/pramila-jayapal-pushes-medicare-for-all-polling-00696301\" target=\"_blank\">reportedly planning<\/a>\u00a0to present those findings to colleagues next month as she pushes Democrats to rally behind her legislation ahead of the critical\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/midterm-elections\">midterm elections<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepJayapal\/status\/2004018509660238144?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2004018509660238144%7Ctwgr%5E09c7d27de61a4d2a056f58444a2fce7840233482%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fwashington-post-medicare-for-all\">https:\/\/x.com\/RepJayapal\/status\/2004018509660238144?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2004018509660238144%7Ctwgr%5E09c7d27de61a4d2a056f58444a2fce7840233482%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fwashington-post-medicare-for-all<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The renewed push for Medicare for All comes as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/healthcareuncovered.substack.com\/p\/how-big-insurance-got-so-big\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">corporate-dominated<\/a>&nbsp;healthcare status quo hits Americans with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/affordable-care-act\/aca-marketplace-premium-payments-would-more-than-double-on-average-next-year-if-enhanced-premium-tax-credits-expire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">massive premium hikes<\/a>&nbsp;stemming from congressional&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/republicans\">Republicans<\/a>\u2019 refusal to extend&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/affordable-care-act\">Affordable Care Act<\/a>&nbsp;tax credits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Predictably, the&nbsp;<em>Post<\/em>\u2018s editorial board\u2014which Bezos has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JeffBezos\/status\/1894757287052362088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">instructed<\/a>&nbsp;to write \u201cevery day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets\u201d\u2014neglected to mention the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/strengthenhealthcare.org\/nearly-half-of-americans-received-medical-bills-that-should-have-been-covered-by-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">myriad horrors<\/a>&nbsp;of the United States\u2019 for-profit system in its diatribe against Medicare for All.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The editorial also ignores research showing potentially massive benefits from a transition to Medicare for All, which would virtually eliminate private insurance while providing comprehensive coverage to everyone in the US for free at the point of service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(19)33019-3\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>&nbsp;published in&nbsp;<em>The Lancet<\/em>&nbsp;estimated that a Medicare for All system would save more than 68,000 lives and over $450 billion in healthcare expenditures annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ysph.yale.edu\/news-article\/yale-study-more-than-335000-lives-could-have-been-saved-during-pandemic-if-us-had-universal-health-care\/\" target=\"_blank\">analysis<\/a>\u00a0by Yale researchers calculated that \u201cif the US had had a single-payer universal healthcare system in 2020\u201d\u2014which marked the onset of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/covid-19\">Covid-19<\/a>\u00a0pandemic\u2014\u201cnearly 212,000 American lives would have been saved that year\u201d and \u201cthe country would have saved $105 billion in Covid-19 hospitalization expenses alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
