Seven Democrats in the US House<\/a> of Representatives voted with nearly all Republicans<\/a> on Thursday to pass a Department of Homeland Security funding bill<\/a> despite growing calls from across the country for Congress to rein in the Trump administration\u2019s deadly immigration<\/a> operations, which are led by DHS agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democratic Reps. Henry Cuellar (Texas<\/a>), Don Davis (NC), Laura Gillen (NY), Jared Golden (Maine<\/a>), Vicente Gonzalez (Texas), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (Wash.), and Tom Suozzi (NY) joined all Republicans but Rep. Thomas Massie (KY) for the 220-207 vote<\/a> that sent the legislation to the Senate\u2014where the GOP<\/a> also has a majority, but it\u2019s so narrow that most bills need some Democratic support to pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries<\/a> (D-NY) notably refused<\/a> to pressure members of his caucus to oppose the bill, even though voters clearly oppose federal operations featuring violence and lawlessness by agents with Customs and Border Protection (CBP<\/a>) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a> (ICE) everywhere from California and Illinois, to Minnesota and Maine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeffries and other Democratic leaders have\u00a0faced<\/a>\u00a0growing public pressure to use a rapidly approaching deadline\u2014if Congress doesn\u2019t pass legislation by January 30, the federal government shuts down again\u2014to freeze ICE funding. The bill that advanced out of the House on Thursday\u00a0would give<\/a>\u00a0ICE $10 billion and CBP $18.3 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI just voted HELL NO to giving ICE a single penny,\u201d declared<\/a> Rep. Ayanna Pressley<\/a> (D-Mass.), who\u2019s part of the progressive Squad. \u201cCongress should not be funding an agency that has terrorized our communities, kidnapped our neighbors, and killed people on the street with impunity. We must abolish ICE and end qualified immunity for ICE agents NOW.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two weeks ago, ICE officer Jonathan Ross fatally shot Renee Good, a 37-year-old US citizen and mother of three, in the Twin Cities, where President Donald Trump<\/a> has sent thousands of federal agents. Videos, eyewitness accounts, analyses of the shooting, and an independent autopsy have fueled<\/a> calls for Ross\u2019 arrest and prosecution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Squad member Rep.\u00a0Ilhan Omar<\/a>\u00a0(D-Minn.), whose district includes Minneapolis,\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0ahead of the vote: \u201cDeporting<\/a>\u00a0children<\/a>\u00a0with cancer.\u00a0Using<\/a>\u00a0a 5-year-old as bait. Shooting moms. ICE is beyond reform. And today the House is voting to bankroll more terror. Hell no.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
