The FBI has focused its investigation on Good\u2019s ties to activist groups as ICE agents have increasingly threatened people for filming and observing their operations.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A supervisor in the FBI\u2019s Minneapolis field office became the latest official to resign over the federal law enforcement agency\u2019s handling of the investigation into an immigration<\/a> agent\u2019s fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the New York Times<\/a><\/em> reported<\/a> Friday, FBI<\/a> agent Tracee Mergen, acting supervisor of the office\u2019s <\/strong>Public Corruption<\/a> Squad, resigned after senior FBI officials in Washington<\/a> pushed her to end a civil rights<\/a> probe into the killing. The agency is focusing on investigating Good and her wife, who were legally observing US Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a>, instead of determining whether ICE agent Jonathan Ross used excessive force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An FBI source told<\/a> CBS News <\/em>that Mergen \u201cwould not bow to pressure\u201d from the agency\u2019s leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting immediately after Good was shot three times at close range by Ross, who was one of several agents who had approached her vehicle and, according<\/a> to eyewitnesses, shouted conflicting orders at her, Trump administration<\/a> officials have described<\/a> Good and her wife as \u201cdomestic terrorists.\u201d They have accused her of trying to run over Ross, a claim that has not been supported<\/a> by detailed analysis of footage of the killing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Federal prosecutors have refused<\/a> to allow authorities in Minnesota to conduct a probe into the killing, and Harmeet Dhillon, the Trump administration\u2019s assistant attorney general for civil rights, announced<\/a><\/a> days after Good was killed that the US Department of Justice\u2019s (DOJ) Civil Rights Division would not be investigating\u2014which would ordinarily be a standard step in a shooting involving a federal law enforcement agent. That decision led four top officials in Dhillon\u2019s office to resign in protest<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six federal prosecutors in the US attorney\u2019s office in Minnesota also\u00a0stepped down<\/a>\u00a0after the DOJ made clear that Becca and Renee Good\u2014not Ross\u2014would be the focus of an investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As NBC News<\/em> reported<\/a> Friday, the DOJ also directed the US attorney\u2019s office and FBI agents to investigate whether Good could have been criminally liable in her own death. Agents had drafted a search warrant to obtain her car, but they were told by aides to Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche to redraft the warrant to search the car for evidence of an attack on Ross. A federal judge rejected the warrant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like many residents of Minneapolis, Chicago, and Charlotte, North Carolina have in recent months as thousands of ICE agents have descended on US cities and detained immigrants and citizens alike, the Goods were observing and filming ICE operations on January 7 when Renee Good was shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Filming ICE is legal<\/a> as long as doing so does not interfere with agents\u2019 operations. Yet officers have increasingly threatened<\/a> people for observing them and claimed that doing so is an act of domestic terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One agent in Portland, Maine<\/a> on Friday told<\/a> an observer she would be included in a \u201cnice little database\u201d and \u201cconsidered a domestic terrorist,\u201d after she filmed ICE operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volunteers for neighborhood ICE watches in Maine told<\/a> the Portland Press Herald<\/em> that ICE agents have shown up at their houses and issued warnings not to follow them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The threats, and the FBI\u2019s insistence on investigating Good\u2019s alleged ties to what it calls \u201cactivist groups,\u201d come months after Attorney General Pam Bondi<\/a> signed a memo expanding the DOJ\u2019s definition of domestic terrorism to include \u201cimpeding\u201d law enforcement officers or \u201cdoxxing\u201d them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That memo followed National Security Presidential Memorandum 7, or NSPM-7, a document signed by President Donald Trump<\/a> shortly after the assassination of right-wing<\/a> political activist Charlie Kirk<\/a>, which mandates<\/a> a \u201cnational strategy to investigate and disrupt networks, entities, and organizations that foment political violence so that law enforcement can intervene in criminal conspiracies before they result in violent political acts.\u201d The memo exclusively focuses on \u201canti-fascist\u201d or left-wing activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
