Another eight detention centers would hold as many as 10,000 people at a time, with the detainees awaiting deportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/washington-post\">Washington Post<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2026\/02\/13\/ice-detention-center-expansion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;that a review of state&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/budget\">budget<\/a>&nbsp;data showed that the amount of money the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/white-house\">White House<\/a>&nbsp;intends to pour into the project over the next several months is larger than the total annual spending of 22 US states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThirty-eight billion dollars,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepMoulton\/status\/2022313767657214038\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.). \u201cThat\u2019s what Trump is spending to turn warehouses into human holding facilities. Not on schools. Not on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/healthcare\">healthcare<\/a>. Not on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/veterans\">veterans<\/a>. On warehousing humans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moulton also condemned ICE\u2019s claim that the new network of detention facilities will ensure the \u201csafe and humane civil detention\u201d of immigrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least six people&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/blog\/ice-deaths-shootings-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">died<\/a>&nbsp;in ICE detention centers in January, and one of the deaths, that of Geraldo Lunas Campos at Camp East Montana in El Paso,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/texas\">Texas<\/a>, was ruled a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/homicide-ice-detention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">homicide<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Medical neglect and abusive treatment\u2014including some that amounts to torture\u2014has been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/alligator-alcatraz-conditions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;at multiple facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ICE has already spent more than $690 million purchasing at least eight warehouses in Maryland, Arizona, Georgia, Texas,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/pennsylvania\">Pennsylvania<\/a>, and Michigan in recent weeks.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.nh.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/ehbemt971\/files\/inline-documents\/merrimack-detention-reengineering-initiative.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Documents<\/a>&nbsp;posted on Ayotte\u2019s website show the agency is pursuing additional acquisitions in New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, and Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Communities are already rallying against the plan and questioning whether the small towns ICE has selected have sufficient&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/water\">water<\/a>&nbsp;and sewer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/infrastructure\">infrastructure<\/a>&nbsp;to support thousands of people detained in a warehouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In New York, Rep. Pat Ryan (D-NY) said last week that 25,000 people in his district have signed a petition opposing the use of a local warehouse to house immigrants and pointed to the \u201cmajor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/corruption\">corruption<\/a>&nbsp;and graft\u201d evident in the plan to purchase and run the warehouses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe site in my district that\u2019s proposed is owned by one of Trump\u2019s multibillionaire donors, who would directly financially benefit from this site,\u201d said Ryan, referring to former Trump adviser Carl Icahn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI\u2019m telling you, we are not going to let this happen in my district.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PatRyanUC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@PatRyanUC<\/a> is pushing back on the Trump administration\u2019s plan to buy warehouses across the country to turn them into mass detention centers, including one in his New York district. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KYOQb4WJx6\">pic.twitter.com\/KYOQb4WJx6<\/a><\/p>&mdash; The Recount (@therecount) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/therecount\/status\/2019447207045308631?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 5, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As&nbsp;<em>Common Dreams<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/geo-group-ice-profits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;Friday, private prison firm GEO Group raked in a record $254 million in profits last year as it secured contracts with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/trump-administration\">Trump administration<\/a>&nbsp;to build new ICE facilities across the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ICE has attempted to make purchases in Oklahoma City; Kansas City, Missouri; and in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/virginia\">Virginia<\/a>, but those plans have fallen through, with the Kansas City Council&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2026\/02\/13\/ice-detention-center-expansion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passing<\/a>&nbsp;a five-year ban on new nonmunicipal detention centers after the public learned that DHS was the potential buyer of a warehouse in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) has also joined his constituents in speaking out against ICE\u2019s $100 million purchase of a warehouse in his state to house at least 1,000 people at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis administration is spitting in the face of communities from Minneapolis to Maryland and wasting our tax dollars. We won\u2019t back down,\u201d said Van Hollen late last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>X post:  <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ChrisVanHollen\/status\/2016243337703903275?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2016243337703903275%7Ctwgr%5Ee0e0013896e05e45629f8b453f17e93701d5c177%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Flist-of-ice-detention-centers\">https:\/\/x.com\/ChrisVanHollen\/status\/2016243337703903275?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2016243337703903275%7Ctwgr%5Ee0e0013896e05e45629f8b453f17e93701d5c177%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Flist-of-ice-detention-centers<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The details of the administration\u2019s planned conversion of warehouses were reported less than two weeks after Pablo Manr\u00edquez of&nbsp;<em>Migrant Insider<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/military-contract-concentration-camps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">revealed<\/a>&nbsp;that a US Navy contract originally valued at $10 billion \u201chas ballooned to a staggering $55 billion ceiling to expedite President Donald Trump\u2019s \u2018mass deportation\u2019 agenda\u201d and to help build \u201ca sprawling network of migrant detention centers across the US.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At&nbsp;<em>Common Dreams<\/em>&nbsp;last week, talk show host and author&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/thom-hartmann\">Thom Hartmann<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/opinion\/why-isn-t-news-of-trump-building-vast-concentration-camps-being-treated-as-a-national-emergency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;that the warehouses Trump plans to use to hold people\u2014purchased by an agency whose own data&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/dhs-worst-of-worst-database\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shows<\/a>&nbsp;it has largely been detaining people with no criminal records\u2014are best described as concentration camps like those used in Nazi Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy the end of his first year, [Adolf] Hitler had around 50,000 people held in his roughly 70 concentration camps, facilities that were often improvised in factories,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/prisons\">prisons<\/a>, castles, and other buildings,\u201d wrote Hartmann. \u201cBy comparison, today ICE is holding over 70,000 people in 225 concentration camps across America,\u201d with hopes to \u201cmore than double both numbers in the coming months.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGermany\u2019s concentration camps didn\u2019t start as instruments of mass murder, and neither have ours; both started as facilities for people the government\u2019s leader said were a problem.
