Jack Reed (D-RI) talk with witnesses before a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on March 5, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0(Photo by Tom Williams\/CQ-Roll Call, Inc. via Getty Images)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cBoth practically and politically, a vote to fund the war is a vote for the war\u2014a war Americans cannot afford and do not want.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/jake-johnson\">Jake Johnson<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mar 06, 2026 (CommonDreams.org)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Democratic members of Congress are facing renewed pressure to oppose any&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/trump-administration\">Trump administration<\/a>&nbsp;funding requests to help bankroll its illegal, open-ended war on Iran after congressional Republicans\u2014along with a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/iran-war-powers-resolution-bill\">handful of pro-war Democrats<\/a>\u2014voted this week to defeat efforts to end the assault, which is costing US taxpayers roughly $1 billion per day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/house-republicans\">House Republicans<\/a>&nbsp;and four Democrats voted down an Iran war powers resolution late Thursday, the ACLU implored Congress \u201cto use its funding authority to block all supplemental funding requests for war funding from the Department of Defense while President Trump is engaging in this unconstitutional war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RECOMMENDED&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/dems-sabotage-iran-war-powers-resolution\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/democratic-leaders-jeffries-and-schumer.jpg?id=65018522&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=333%2C0%2C334%2C0\" alt=\"Democratic Leaders Jeffries and Schumer\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/dems-sabotage-iran-war-powers-resolution\">Top Dems Reportedly Working to Sabotage Bill to Stop Trump War With Iran<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/iran-war-powers-resolution-bill\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/house-votes-9-4-25.jpg?id=65158663&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=833%2C0%2C833%2C0\" alt=\"House Votes 9\/4\/25\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/iran-war-powers-resolution-bill\">\u2018We Have Only Just Begun,\u2019 Hegseth Says as 4 House Dems Join GOP to Back Trump War on Iran<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithout Congress authorizing additional funds, the military will simply run out of money to spend on the war,\u201d the group added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Trump administration is reportedly crafting a $50 billion supplemental funding request aimed at financing its war, which has killed more than 1,000 Iranians and counting.&nbsp;<em>Politico<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/03\/05\/congress\/republicans-eye-a-ballooning-war-package-with-aid-for-farmers-wildfires-00815594\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;Thursday that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/republicans\">Republicans<\/a>&nbsp;are \u201cdebating whether to attach wildfire aid and $15 billion in tariff relief for farmers\u201d to the supplemental funding measure in an effort to attract Democratic support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Priorities Project (NPP) has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/opinion\/50-billion-funding-for-iran-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a>&nbsp;that $50 billion would be enough to extend enhanced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/affordable-care-act\">Affordable Care Act<\/a>&nbsp;subsidies for a year, restore federal nutrition assistance to millions who are set to lose it due to the Trump-GOP&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/budget\">budget<\/a>&nbsp;law, and expand&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/medicaid\">Medicaid<\/a>&nbsp;to nearly 2 million people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe question isn\u2019t whether the money exists\u2014it\u2019s what we choose to spend it on,\u201d NPP\u2019s Alliyah Lusuegro and Lindsay Koshgarian wrote Thursday. \u201cThere\u2019s never been a better time to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalpriorities.org\/take-action\/contact-your-representative\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">call your members of Congress<\/a>. We need to oppose this war before it\u2019s too late.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAny member of Congress who rubber stamps another dime for this war of choice should expect to hear from our members.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some Senate Democrats\u2014including Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), the ranking member on the Senate Armed Services Committee\u2014have not ruled out voting for a possible supplemental funding bill for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/pentagon\">Pentagon<\/a>, even as the annual&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/us-military\">US military<\/a>&nbsp;budget cleared $1 trillion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have to look at what they need,\u201d Reed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/03\/04\/democrats-iran-supplemental-funding-00813547\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;earlier this week. \u201cSome of it might be to fill in critical issues and other theaters of war they\u2019ve taken things from.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/trump-iran-war-democrats_n_69a9ac7ae4b0d84f0de0dc11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;<em>HuffPost<\/em>&nbsp;that she \u201cwould like to understand the goals of the war before I decide how I feel about the funding of the war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dylan Williams, vice president for government affairs at the Center for International Policy,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/dylanotes\/status\/2029613972845121736\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;Thursday that \u201cboth practically and politically, a vote to fund the war is a vote for the war\u2014a war Americans cannot afford and do not want.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The progressive advocacy group MoveOn&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MoveOn\/status\/2029275274911809839\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;its members \u201cconsider a vote for the supplemental a vote in favor of Donald Trump\u2019s war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAny member of Congress who rubber stamps another dime for this war of choice should expect to hear from our members,\u201d the group added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To break the 60-vote&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/filibuster\">filibuster<\/a>&nbsp;in the Senate, Republicans would need at least seven Democrats to cross the aisle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/chris-murphy\">Chris Murphy<\/a>&nbsp;(D-Conn.) expressed emphatic opposition to the floated supplemental funding bill in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/social-media\">social media<\/a>&nbsp;post on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a hell no on funding for Trump\u2019s illegal, disastrous Iran War,\u201d Murphy\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ChrisMurphyCT\/status\/2029589740169597289\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
