Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) addresses voting rights supporters at the All Roads Lead to the South rally in Montgomery, Alabama on May 16, 2026.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Photo by @saedaaya\/X)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Labor rights and voting rights groups were among those who gathered in Selma and Montgomery, Alabama for the All Roads Lead to the South Day of Action.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/julia-conley\">Julia Conley<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>May 16, 2026 (CommonDreams.org)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>This is a developing story&#8230; Please check back for possible updates&#8230;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a show of resistance to the US Supreme Court\u2019s dismantling of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/voting-rights\">Voting Rights<\/a>&nbsp;Act and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/republicans\">Republicans<\/a>\u2019 efforts to redraw congressional districts across southern states in a bid to retain power despite their party\u2019s unpopular agenda, labor and voting rights groups were among those that arrived in Montgomery, Alabama Saturday for \u201cDay One\u201d of a mass mobilization against&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/gop\">GOP<\/a>&nbsp;lawmakers who they said are intent on \u201cresurrecting Jim Crow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RECOMMENDED&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/gerrymandering-trump\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/no-kings-day-in-charlotte.jpg?id=61747380&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=8%2C0%2C9%2C0\" alt=\"No Kings Day in Charlotte\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/gerrymandering-trump\">No Kings Movement and \u2018All Roads Lead to the South\u2019 to Protest GOP Voting Rights Attacks<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/alabama-south-carolina-gerrymander\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/alabama-statehouse.jpg?id=66715580&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=209%2C0%2C209%2C0\" alt=\"Alabama statehouse.\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/alabama-south-carolina-gerrymander\">Alabama, South Carolina Join GOP Push to Dilute Black, Democratic Districts<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While groups including the Movement for Black Lives and National Jobs With Justice boarded buses in Atlanta Saturday morning to join more than 250 organizations at a rally at the Alabama State Capitol, other organizers began the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/gerrymandering-trump\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cAll Roads Lead to the South\u201d National Day of Action<\/a>\u00a0with a march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/selma\">Selma<\/a>, Alabama\u2014the same site of the historic 1965 voting rights march that became known as Bloody Sunday.&#8221;We started here because we wanted to stand on sacred ground and consecrate ourselves,&#8221; said organizer LaTosha Brown, co-founder of the group Black Voters Matter. &#8220;You cannot fight hate with hate, you have to stand in the spirit of love, and so look around\u2014this is what love looks like.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twitter post:  <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/broadcasts\/1pJdRbdXRoNKW\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/broadcasts\/1pJdRbdXRoNKW<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The march and rally were organized in response to a ramp-up of efforts by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/republican-party\">Republican Party<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/right-wing\">right-wing<\/a>&nbsp;courts, including the far-right majority on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/us-supreme-court\">US Supreme Court<\/a>, to redraw electoral maps in states including Louisiana, Alabama, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/tennessee\">Tennessee<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mass mobilization was organized after the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/supreme-court\">Supreme Court<\/a>&nbsp;handed down its ruling in Louisiana v. Callais last month, effectively eviscerating Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which has held that voters of color have the right to legally challenge racially discriminatory congressional maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Supreme Court this week&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/tennessee-gerrymandering-lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">allowed<\/a>&nbsp;Alabama to revert back to an electoral map with just one majority-Black district out of seven, despite that fact that 26% of Alabama residents are Black.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tennessee Republicans also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/tennessee-republicans-map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adopted<\/a>&nbsp;a new electoral map that splits up the state\u2019s only majority-Black district, and the Missouri Supreme Court approved a congressional map that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/political-map-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">targets<\/a>&nbsp;the state\u2019s 5th District, represented by Rep. Emanuel Cleaver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arriving in Montgomery, Tennessee state Rep. The fight to keep it is ours. Right now, state by state, that law is being dismantled. We know that we cannot fight the same battles the same way. New times demand new tactics\u2014economic pressure, political organizing, community action, culture, and faith. But we know what we know: Organizing works. And we have unfinished business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the rally, US Rep.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez\">Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/a>&nbsp;(D-NY) emphasized the need for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/solidarity\">solidarity<\/a>&nbsp;from across the US, with supporters of voting rights mobilizing in states near and far from the South\u2014the current center of the GOP\u2019s attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey think they can draw us out of power. They do not know the sleeping giant they just awakened,\u201d said Ocasio-Cortez. \u201cWhen Black Americans have the right to vote and that vote is protected, our schools get funded. When voting rights are protected,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/healthcare\">healthcare<\/a>\u00a0gets expanded. When voting rights are protected, our country moves forward. It came for anyone who tried to organize and have a voice,\u201d said Smiley. \u201cEfforts to rollback equality and democracy are happening in the occupied cities, shop floors, and now the halls of the Capitol across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Ala.) called for the rally to mark the beginning of a \u201cFreedom Summer,\u201d with rallies at \u201cevery State House\u201d in the country to pressure state legislators to end the GOP&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/gerrymandering\">gerrymandering<\/a>&nbsp;efforts, which President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>&nbsp;has explicitly called for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s declare a Freedom Summer and go to every courthouse this summer, to tell those legislators, \u2018We will not go back,\u2019\u201d said Sewell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dozens of\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mobilize.us\/blackvotersmatter\/map\/?date=2026-05-16T06%3A00%3A00.000Z&amp;q=All%20Roads%20Lead%20to%20the%20South&amp;zoom=2.5\" target=\"_blank\">satellite events<\/a>\u00a0were also taking place across the US on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
