The law also expands punitive SNAP work requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RECOMMENDED&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/hunger-surges-after-trump-cuts\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/people-line-up-for-food-donations.jpg?id=61989958&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=1000%2C0%2C1000%2C0\" alt=\"People line up for food donations\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/hunger-surges-after-trump-cuts\">\u2018Number of People Who Don\u2019t Have Enough to Eat\u2019 Surging Due to Trump-GOP Aid Cuts<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/sanders-omar-end-child-hunger\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/school-children-have-lunch-in-a-library-in-san-francisco-california.jpg?id=56527402&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=960%2C0%2C960%2C0\" alt=\"School children have lunch in a library in San Francisco, California\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/sanders-omar-end-child-hunger\">As Trump Slashes Food Aid, Sanders and Omar Lead Bill to \u2018End Child Hunger in the United States\u2019<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The new analysis notes that children account for \u201cnearly half of the 1.6-million-person decline\u201d in SNAP enrollment since last July among people of all ages in the 12 states with data available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe new law\u2019s cost shift has led states to take steps that are making it harder for eligible people to receive SNAP, including families with children,\u201d CBPP explained. \u201cLosing SNAP also makes it harder for low-income children to qualify for other food assistance, such as WIC and free school meals\u2014jeopardizing the short- and long-term health, education, and economic benefits of nutrition programs for our children and society.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/image.png?id=66827632&amp;width=1400&amp;quality=70\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Republican lawmakers repeatedly denied that their legislation would strip food aid from needy children, with House Speaker&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/mike-johnson\">Mike Johnson<\/a>&nbsp;(R-La.) saying the package was laser-focused on \u201cfraud, waste, and abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are not cutting SNAP,\u201d Johnson&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2025\/may\/29\/mike-johnson\/SNAP-reconciliation-bill-tax-cuts-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">falsely claimed<\/a>&nbsp;in May 2025, just over a month before Trump signed the Republican legislation into law. The package will cut $186 billion from SNAP over the next decade and strip food aid from millions of low-income people, according to the nonpartisan&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/democrats-agriculture.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=2961\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Congressional Budget Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Katie Bergh, a senior policy analyst at CBPP,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Katie_Bergh\/status\/2059672552272707687\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emphasized<\/a>&nbsp;that the SNAP cuts triggered by the Republican law have not \u201cfully taken effect,\u201d meaning recent benefit losses among families across the country are just the start unless Congress moves quickly to avert disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCongress must act before even more eligible low-income families\u2014including families with children\u2014lose the food assistance they need to afford groceries, starting by delaying this SNAP cost shift for all states,\u201d Bergh wrote on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/social-media\">social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Trump-GOP cuts to SNAP, combined with rising grocery costs stemming in large part from the president\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/tariffs\">tariffs<\/a>&nbsp;and war of choice against Iran, have resulted in surging food bank demand across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been going to food banks every week,\u201d a single mom in Arizona whose SNAP benefits were recently cut off&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/trump-food-stamp-cuts-children-arizona-hungry-big-beautiful-bill-rcna343922\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;NBC News. \u201cWe\u2019re eating less, we\u2019re eating more frozen stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Far from reversing course on their assault on federal nutrition assistance, Republicans and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/trump-administration\">Trump administration<\/a>\u00a0are doubling down,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/republicans-cut-food-aid\" target=\"_blank\">pursuing massive cuts<\/a>\u00a0to fruit and vegetable benefits for low-income mothers. CBPP has\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/blog\/house-agriculture-bill-underfunds-wic-cuts-fruit-and-vegetable-benefit-and-fails-to-make\" target=\"_blank\">projected<\/a>\u00a0that roughly 5.4 million people would lose fruit and vegetable aid if Republicans\u2019 newly proposed cuts become law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
