The publication draws upon an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/itep.org\/88-profitable-corporations-paid-zero-income-tax-in-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analysis<\/a>&nbsp;published in April by the Institute on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/taxation\">Taxation<\/a>&nbsp;and Economic Policy (ITEP)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/88-companies-no-income-tax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">showing<\/a>&nbsp;that at least 88 of the nation\u2019s largest companies paid no federal corporate income tax in fiscal year 2025, despite reporting combined US pretax income of around $105 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RECOMMENDED&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-corporate-tax-dodging\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/president-trump-signs-his-big-beautiful-bill-into-law-and-celebrates-independence-day-at-the-white-house.jpg?id=61429268&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=170%2C0%2C171%2C0\" alt=\"President Trump Signs His &quot;Big, Beautiful Bill&quot; Into Law And Celebrates Independence Day At The White House\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-corporate-tax-dodging\">Trump Lets Big Corporations Dodge $40 Billion in Taxes as He Jacks Up Costs for Working Class<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/house-cuts-wic\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/house-speaker-mike-johnson.jpg?id=66866970&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=832%2C0%2C833%2C0\" alt=\"House Speaker Mike Johnson\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/house-cuts-wic\">House GOP, With Help of 4 Dems, Votes to Take Food Aid From Millions of Women and Kids<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUsing data from OpenSecrets, which compiles and publishes&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/campaign-finance\">campaign finance<\/a>&nbsp;and lobbying data, we found that from the 2020 election cycle through the 2024 cycle, these 88 companies have spent nearly $852 million on lobbying and campaign contributions,\u201d O\u2019Grady&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/article\/the-current-price-of-zero\/#_ftn1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cWe highlight the companies that spent the most money on lobbying, hired the most lobbyists, lobbied specifically on tax issues, and contributed the most cash to political campaigns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The federal corporate income tax rate is 21%, indicating that the 88 companies in the report dodged a combined $22.1 billion in taxes last year. Additionally, they received $4.7 billion in tax rebates, bringing their total tax breaks to approximately $26.7 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe largest and richest corporations in the country are paying zero in federal income tax, and that is a slap in the face to the American taxpayers who are struggling to afford necessities like groceries and healthcare,\u201d<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>O\u2019Grady said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/newswire\/corporate-tax-dodgers-lobbying-and-political-spending-records-reveal-self-reinforcing-loop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>Meanwhile, these companies are spending money that could have gone to the public good on lobbying for even more special advantages and tax breaks,\u201d she added. \u201cIn this backwards, cash-fueled system, the deck is being stacked ever higher in favor of corporations, and against working people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report\u2019s key findings include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The 88 corporations that paid no federal corporate income tax in 2025 spent $712 million on lobbying and $140 million on campaign contributions over the last three election cycles;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comparing the taxes the corporations saved against the cost of their political spending, they collectively made a 3,000% return on investment;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coinbase Global spent the most of any company\u2014$89 million\u2014followed by CVS Health ($66 million), Honeywell International ($56 million), American Electric Power ($47 million), and Duke Energy ($35 million);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On average each year, these companies together have sent 1,119 lobbyists to influence the federal government, including on tax issues and legislation that changed the tax code in favor of corporate giveaways; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Since the beginning of 2025, these companies have collectively laid off at least 21,200&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/workers\">workers<\/a>&nbsp;and announced plans to lay off thousands more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our findings suggest that while&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/republicans\">Republicans<\/a>&nbsp;lawmakers rewrote the tax code to enshrine massive giveaways to wealthy corporations, those same corporate tax dodgers poured millions into lobbying and political campaigns that yielded further tax breaks, which in turn has bankrolled even more political influence,&#8221; O&#8217;Grady wrote. &#8220;The result is a self-reinforcing loop where corporate cash buys policy, and policy pays cash back.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report singles out two related pieces of legislation\u2014President Donald Trump\u2019s 2017&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/tax-cuts\">Tax Cuts<\/a>&nbsp;and Jobs Act, and the so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), signed into law by Trump last July 4\u2014which enabled \u201cseveral common strategies the companies used to get tax breaks and rebates.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe most commonly used corporate tax giveaway, accelerated depreciation, enabled more than half of the companies to collectively avoid $11.4 billion in taxes by allowing them to write off capital investments immediately,\u201d O\u2019Grady noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn addition, a tax break supercharged under the Big Ugly Law allowed more than 30 companies to immediately write off research and development expenses, which alone netted them at least $4.4 billion in savings,\u201d she added, using a common liberal epithet for the OBBBA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the US Supreme Court\u2019s 2010&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/2008\/08-205\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;ruling\u2014which affirmed that political spending by corporations, nonprofit organizations, labor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/unions\">unions<\/a>, and other groups is a form of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/free-speech\">free speech<\/a>&nbsp;protected by the First Amendment\u2014nearly $20 billion has been spent on US presidential elections and more than $53 billion on congressional races,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/elections-overview\/cost-of-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a>&nbsp;data compiled by OpenSecrets. Spending on 2024 congressional races was double 2010 levels, while presidential campaign contributions were more than 50% higher in 2024 than in 2008, the last election before&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/citizens-united\">Citizens United<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultrawealthy and corporate megadonors\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/research-reports\/fifteen-years-later-citizens-united-defined-2024-election\" target=\"_blank\">played a critical role<\/a>\u00a0in Trump\u2019s 2024 victory. Fossil fuel interests\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/big-oil-donations-trump\" target=\"_blank\">spent more than $445 million<\/a>\u00a0during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/2024-election\">2024 election<\/a>\u00a0cycle on campaign donations, lobbying, and other efforts to elect Trump and his Republican allies, plus pass policies that benefit their climate-wrecking businesses.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\">Artificial intelligence<\/a>\u00a0and cryptocurrency are fast emerging as some of the most prolific lobbyists. Trump and Republicans in Congress have\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-ai-framework-criticism\" target=\"_blank\">promoted<\/a>\u00a0policies and legislation boosting these sectors and shielding them from government regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>X post:  <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Graham_dePenros\/status\/2064121479042916591?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2064121479042916591%7Ctwgr%5E0aaa35c0be9d495866533978fc4170bc40e2fdba%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Ftax-dodging-corporations-spend-big-on-lobbying\">https:\/\/x.com\/Graham_dePenros\/status\/2064121479042916591?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2064121479042916591%7Ctwgr%5E0aaa35c0be9d495866533978fc4170bc40e2fdba%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Ftax-dodging-corporations-spend-big-on-lobbying<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elon Musk\u2014the CEO of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/tesla\">Tesla<\/a>&nbsp;and SpaceX and majority owner of X who could soon become the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/elon-musk-trillionaire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">world\u2019s first trillionaire<\/a>\u2014is the most prominent of the numerous Trump donors who have been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/public-citizen-trump-cabinet-picks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rewarded&nbsp;<\/a>with Cabinet nominations and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/elon-musk-elizabeth-warren-doge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other key appointments<\/a>&nbsp;in \u201can administration dominated by billionaires and corporate interests,\u201d as Americans for Tax Fairness executive director David Kass&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-inauguration-oligarchy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">described<\/a>&nbsp;it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O\u2019Grady wrote that \u201ccorporate tax dodgers spend lavishly on lobbying and campaign contributions that feed into more tax breaks, which in turn fund even more political spending on policies that serve to pad corporate profits\u2014and the cycle continues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To remedy this, the report asserts: \u201cIt is imperative that Congress undo the Republican tax giveaways to corporations like bonus depreciation and research and development write-offs. In addition, the corporate rate must be increased to at least the 35% rate that stood before the 2017 law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCorporations should not be able to deduct multimillion-dollar bonuses. And Congress must prevent multinational corporations from avoiding taxes by booking profits in offshore subsidiaries by equalizing the domestic and international tax rates,\u201d the publication concludes. \u201cWith these and other reforms to our tax code, our nation could have more than enough revenue to breinvest in American communities and make life more affordable for everyone.
