Meanwhile, the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee advanced the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/appropriations.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/republicans-appropriations.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/fy27-defense-subcommittee-mark.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fiscal Year 2027 Defense Appropriations Bill<\/a>&nbsp;during a closed-door markup. The House bill provides $1.072 trillion for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/pentagon\">Pentagon<\/a>&nbsp;and other military-related activities, a $234 billion increase from this year\u2019s enacted level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RECOMMENDED&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/house-cuts-wic\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/house-speaker-mike-johnson.jpg?id=66866970&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=832%2C0%2C833%2C0\" alt=\"House Speaker Mike Johnson\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/house-cuts-wic\">House GOP, With Help of 4 Dems, Votes to Take Food Aid From Millions of Women and Kids<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/poor-children-losing-food-aid\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/families-receive-groceries-from-a-food-bank.jpg?id=61988729&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=1009%2C0%2C1010%2C0\" alt=\"Families receive groceries from a food bank\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/poor-children-losing-food-aid\">Over 700,000 Poor Kids Across 12 States Have Lost Food Aid Under Trump-GOP Budget Law<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Trump administration\u2019s broader national security proposal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-2027-military-budget\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">requests nearly $1.5 trillion<\/a>&nbsp;in total defense-related spending for 2027, which includes&nbsp;<strong><\/strong>$350 billion in supplemental funding for munitions production, shipbuilding, missile defense, drones,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\">artificial intelligence<\/a>, and other long-term military programs. Trump wants Congress to use the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/budget\">budget<\/a>&nbsp;reconciliation process to secure the additional funding. However,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/gop\">GOP<\/a>&nbsp;lawmakers are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/5920947-gop-senators-oppose-third-reconciliation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wary<\/a>&nbsp;to do so for a third time; just this week, Republicans used reconciliation to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/house-republicans-2677019857\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pass $70 billion in new funding<\/a>&nbsp;for US&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/immigration\">Immigration<\/a>&nbsp;and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis year, the majority has written a Defense Appropriations Act that provides the department with over a trillion dollars\u2014an unprecedented sum. But this level of defense spending comes at the cost of cuts to domestic investments like education and workforce training, as well as international diplomacy,\u201d Defense Appropriations Subcommittee Ranking Member Betty McCollum (D-Minn.) said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/democrats-appropriations.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/1072210299000-republicans-push-forward-largest-defense-funding-bill-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><\/strong>\u201cPresident Trump said, \u2018Jump,\u2019 and Republicans in Congress said, \u2018How high?\u2019 Meanwhile, Republicans are proposing nearly $13 billion in cuts to domestic programs that provide relief for working families struggling to stay afloat as costs keep rising,\u201d the congresswoman added. \u201cThe American people are begging for relief from high prices, but the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/trump-administration\">Trump administration<\/a>&nbsp;and Republicans in Congress are deaf to their pleas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to increasing the national debt by an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-2027-military-budget\">estimated $6.9 trillion<\/a>&nbsp;over the next decade, Trump is seeking&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-2027-budget\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">over $70 billion in proposed domestic cuts<\/a>, including the elimination of the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, sharp cuts in student aid, ending the Job Corps, slashing medical research and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/public-health\">public health<\/a>&nbsp;programs and Federal Emergency Management Agency assistance, reducing mental health and substance abuse programs, and halving&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/environmental-protection-agency\">Environmental Protection Agency<\/a>&nbsp;funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These and other proposed reductions follow the enactment of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/republicans-cut-medicaid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">biggest cuts<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/medicaid\">Medicaid<\/a>&nbsp;and the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program in the programs\u2019 histories under the so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act signed by Trump last July. The OBBBA cuts were made to help fund trillions of dollars in tax reductions that disproportionately benefit the wealthiest Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert Weisman, co-president of the consumer advocacy watchdog&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/public-citizen\">Public Citizen<\/a>, noted significant opposition to Trump\u2019s proposed $234 billion increase in Pentagon spending for 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is a rising tide of Democratic and Republican opposition to Trump\u2019s illegal Iran war and massive proposed increases to the Pentagon budget,\u201d Weissman&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/news\/trumps-reckless-pentagon-budget-faces-rising-opposition-across-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Thursday, pointing to the \u201cdozens\u201d of lawmakers who voted against the additional spending during committee sessions, and the \u201cbipartisan majority of the House\u201d that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/house-passes-iran-war-powers-resolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voted in support<\/a>&nbsp;of the war powers resolution that directs Trump to end his war on Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTrump has repeatedly stated that he doesn\u2019t care about childcare,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/inflation\">inflation<\/a>, or addressing the needs of the American people,\u201d Weissman continued. \u201cInstead, he is seeking an overall $600 billion annual increase in Pentagon spending that would raise the total Pentagon budget to over $1.5 trillion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe American people are demanding Congress block Trump\u2019s attempts to increase the Pentagon budget,\u201d he said. \u201cThis means voting against his National Defense Authorization Act, rejecting any Iran war supplemental funding bill, and blocking his proposed third reconciliation bill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe money that Trump wants to burn on war should instead be spent on the needs of the American people, including restoring funding for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/healthcare\">healthcare<\/a>, food, housing, and climate action,\u201d Weissman added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
