Wade<\/a><\/em>, her Democratic challenger Graham Platner&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/grahamformaine\/status\/2066953275321024767?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">had<\/a>&nbsp;a two-word response: \u201cYou should.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Noting that this is the five-term senator\u2019s first reelection campaign since the&nbsp;<em>Dobbs v. I was hoping you could talk to me a little bit about your vote to confirm Kavanaugh and whether you regret that?<br><br>SUSAN COLLINS: I do not regret that vote. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zjL78pNLIi\">pic.twitter.com\/zjL78pNLIi<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/atrupar\/status\/2066947468692955317?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 16, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Collins then tried to pivot, highlighting her votes for liberal justices and saying that the&nbsp;<em>Dobbs<\/em>&nbsp;decision \u201chas not had an impact on the state of Maine,\u201d without mentioning that Democrats control both chambers of the state Legislature and the governor\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also responding to the video of Collins on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/social-media\">social media<\/a>&nbsp;Tuesday, Lauren French of&nbsp;the Senate Majority PAC, a political action committee&nbsp;dedicated to electing a Democratic majority in the chamber, said:&nbsp;\u201cUnsurprising. Collins\u2019 abysmal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/abortion\">abortion<\/a>&nbsp;record goes far beyond Kavanaugh and&nbsp;<em>Roe<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe voted to confirm at least 19 anti-abortion Cabinet nominees and 43 anti-abortion federal judges, including nominees who explicitly support fetal personhood and called birth control \u2018abortifacients,\u2019\u201d French highlighted. \u201cAnd just days after the&nbsp;<em>Dobbs<\/em>&nbsp;draft leak, Collins cast the deciding vote&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/05\/11\/beyond-shameful-manchin-joins-senate-gop-again-block-abortion-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">against<\/a>&nbsp;the Women\u2019s Health Protection Act\u2014a bill that would have codified&nbsp;<em>Roe<\/em>&nbsp;into law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout his campaign, Platner has repeatedly called out Collins for backing Kavanaugh, who has sided with the high court\u2019s right-wing supermajority on a range of issues, from abortion to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/collins-supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voting rights<\/a>. After an April decision with massive implications for future elections, he said: \u201cDon\u2019t piss on our boots and tell us it\u2019s raining: Under their bullshit legalese, the far-right&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/supreme-court\">Supreme Court<\/a>&nbsp;gutted the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/voting-rights\">Voting Rights<\/a>&nbsp;Act today. Another disastrous decision brought to you by the court Susan Collins built, one terrible confirmation vote after another.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following month, Platner took aim at the senator for not attending Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee hearings on reproductive&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/healthcare\">healthcare<\/a>, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/abortion\">abortion<\/a>, post-<em>Dobbs<\/em>, declaring that \u201cin the years since&nbsp;<em>Roe<\/em>&nbsp;was overturned, Susan Collins has done everything she can to skirt responsibility and avoid accountability\u2014from skipping hearings to avoiding town halls at all costs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn November, Susan Collins will learn she can only run and hide from her damaging votes for so long. Because whether she knows it or not\u2014her charade is over,\u201d added the oyster farmer and combat veteran, who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/grahamplatner-wife\">has discussed<\/a>&nbsp;his family\u2019s fertility struggles and the high costs of treatments during the campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Platner\u2019s campaign has focused on not only how Collins has made life harder for Mainers and people across the country, but also his support for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grahamforsenate.com\/platform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">policies<\/a>&nbsp;that would benefit the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/working-class\">working class<\/a>&nbsp;and challenge the oligarchs as well as the politicians they&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/maine-political-ads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fund<\/a>\u2014including his Republican opponent, whose reelection bid has been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/susan-collins-billionaire-donors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">backed<\/a>&nbsp;by nearly 100 billionaires and their spouses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Common Dreams&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/abortion-ban-economic-impact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;earlier Tuesday, amid a wave of new state-level restrictions after&nbsp;<em>Dobbs<\/em>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/reproductive-rights\">reproductive rights<\/a>&nbsp;advocates have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/abortion-bans\">emphasized<\/a>&nbsp;the economic impact of abortion bans\u2014which, according to a new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iwpr.org\/articles\/more-than-140-billion-in-lost-earnings-abortion-restrictions-continue-to-harm-women-and-are-a-persistent-drag-on-the-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analysis<\/a>&nbsp;by the Institute for Women\u2019s Policy Research, cost the US economy over $140 billion annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>Dobbs<\/em>&nbsp;decisions and many others from the current court have fueled calls for change. Platner has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/platner-impeach-justices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argued<\/a>&nbsp;that if his party reclaims control of Congress in the November midterms, there is a \u201ccompelling case\u201d to impeach at least two justices\u2014an apparent swipe at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/clarence-thomas\">Clarence Thomas<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/samuel-alito\">Samuel Alito<\/a>, right-wing ideologues who have faced ethics scandals in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Platner has further called for expanding the high court the next time Democrats control Congress and the White House\u2014and stressed that in order to do so, \u201cwe need to elect people to the Senate who want to wield power like that, who understand that power matters, that it\u2019s real and you can use it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
