Racist, rigged maps are dead for now.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/brad-reed\">Brad Reed<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jun 17, 2026 (CommonDreams.org)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Democrats in Georgia are celebrating as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/republicans\">Republicans<\/a>&nbsp;in the state abandoned&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-redistricting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">efforts<\/a>&nbsp;to redraw congressional maps that would have taken effect in 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eight Georgia Republicans, including Speaker of the House Jon Burns, sent a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/acrobat.adobe.com\/id\/urn:aaid:sc:US:528f1741-ebea-4ba5-931e-985d83640280\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a>&nbsp;to Gov. Brian Kemp on Wednesday informing him that they would not be going through with his request to enact redistricting ahead of the 2028 election cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RECOMMENDED&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/court-blocks-rigged-alabama-map\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/black-women-march-for-voting-rights-in-alabama.jpg?id=66820382&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=332%2C0%2C333%2C0\" alt=\"Black women march for voting rights in Alabama \"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/court-blocks-rigged-alabama-map\">Citing \u2018Intentional Race-Based Discrimination,\u2019 Court Blocks Alabama\u2019s GOP-Rigged Electoral Map<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/supreme-court-alabama-map\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/supreme-court-justices.jpg?id=66854573&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=833%2C0%2C834%2C0\" alt=\"Supreme Court justices\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/supreme-court-alabama-map\">\u2018Debases the Democratic Process,\u2019 Sotomayor Warns as Supreme Court Allows Racist Alabama Map<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChanges to Georgia\u2019s maps should take place only when members of the General Assembly and citizens have been given ample opportunity to gather the facts, provide input, and engage in meaningful discussion,\u201d the letter states. \u201cFor this reason, we will not be taking up congressional or legislative redistricting for the 2028 election cycle during this special session.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there is still a chance that Georgia Republicans could ram through new maps later this year.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/democracydocket.com\/post\/3moiuvojm7c2w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/democracy\">Democracy<\/a>&nbsp;Docket, Kemp \u201ccould still call another special session later this year\u2014and if Republicans lose the midterms, they could try to lock in a 2028 advantage by passing new maps before Kemp leaves office next year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Democrats in the state nonetheless celebrated Republicans\u2019 decision to shelve Kemp\u2019s redistricting plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a joint&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GASenateDems\/status\/2067305940785721742\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>, Georgia Senate Minority Leader Harold Jones II and House Minority Leader Carolyn Hugley called on supporters to celebrate \u201ca monumental&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/civil-rights\">civil rights<\/a>&nbsp;victory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRepublicans thought they could get away with drawing racist, rigged maps without a fight,\u201d they said. \u201cToday, thanks to the people showing up and showing out, we won. Racist, rigged maps are dead for now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ReverendWarnock\/status\/2067297930684363036\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">praised<\/a>&nbsp;the work of activists who protested against the redistricting plan earlier in the day, putting pressure on Republicans to drop it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHours after I visited the State Capitol with thousands of Georgians, Georgia&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/house-republicans\">House Republicans<\/a>&nbsp;announced they are backing down from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/gerrymandering\">gerrymandering<\/a>&nbsp;our maps, potentially giving them two extra seats,\u201d wrote Warnock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJohn Lewis never backed down from getting into good trouble and I won\u2019t either,\u201d he added, referring to the late civil rights icon and Democratic member of Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump last year sparked an unprecedented mid-decade redistricting battle when he pushed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/texas\">Texas<\/a>\u00a0to redraw its congressional map to gain extra Republican seats, and GOP-led states including North Carolina, Missouri, and Florida have since followed suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
