The nonprofit Hudson River Sloop Clearwater had attempted to join Saturday\u2019s Sail4th 250 parade of tall ships to New York Harbor when its sailboat was removed by the guard. This corresponds with a Wet Bulb Global Temperature (WBGT)\u2014a measurement that accounts for heat, humidity, and air flow\u2014of 28-30\u00b0C, at which point it is dangerous for even healthy people to be physically active outdoors. According to World Weather Attribution, the current heatwave broke regional records for WBGT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is still a relatively rare event even in today\u2019s climate, that has warmed by 1.4\u00b0C due to the burning of fossil fuels. In a 1.4\u00b0C cooler climate, WBGTs as high as those forecast in early July 2026 would have been so extreme as to be virtually impossible,\u201d the group wrote on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Friederike Otto, a professor of climate&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/science\">science<\/a>&nbsp;at Imperial College London,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/07\/04\/weather\/heat-wave-dc-philadelphia-forecast-climate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a>&nbsp;CNN, \u201cWhen a historic 4th of July celebration is disrupted, and World Cup matches are played in conditions that are unsafe for players and fans, it shouldn\u2019t take another scientific study to wake people up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Otto continued, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/climate-change\">Climate change<\/a>&nbsp;is here, it\u2019s already impacting the things we enjoy in our everyday lives, and it will continue to get worse the longer we drag out the inevitable transition to net zero emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate scientist and communicator Katharine Hayhoe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KHayhoe\/status\/2073112046024237221\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">encouraged<\/a>&nbsp;people to use this opportunity to talk about the climate emergency to their friends and family:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/heatwaves\">Heatwaves<\/a>&nbsp;aren\u2019t new. But I\u2019m a climate scientist, and I can tell you heatwaves like this are virtually impossible without fossil fuel&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/pollution\">pollution<\/a>. Not only that, but when&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/extreme-weather\">extreme weather<\/a>&nbsp;hits, research shows that connecting it to climate change helps people understand why it matters. And you know who the most trusted people to do that are? Not scientists. You! Yes, people we know are the most effective messengers to have these conversations. So if you\u2019re worried about what\u2019s happening and how extreme heat puts us at risk\u2014talk about it!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>While the US is the world\u2019s leading historical emitter of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/greenhouse-gas-emissions\">greenhouse gas emissions<\/a>, and its military&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/us-military-earth-s-greatest-enemy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is<\/a>&nbsp;the No. 1 institutional climate polluter, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/trump-administration\">Trump administration<\/a>&nbsp;in particular has taken steps to accelerate the climate emergency by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-energy-emergency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increasing<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/oil\">oil<\/a>, gas, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/coal\">coal<\/a>&nbsp;production while&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-blocking-all-wind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hindering<\/a>&nbsp;the development of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/renewable-energy\">renewable energy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTrump\u2019s promotion of coal burning and cancellation of wind turbines make him the Benedict Arnold of America\u2019s current struggle, not its George&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/washington\">Washington<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just two days before the nation\u2019s birthday, Energy Secretary and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/fracking\">fracking<\/a>&nbsp;CEO Chris Wright&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecretaryWright\/status\/2072743412080504921\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bragged<\/a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/social-media\">social media<\/a>&nbsp;that the Trump administration would end subsidies for new wind and solar on July 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate scientist Rebekah Jones&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GeoRebekah\/status\/2073085766129901768\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shot back<\/a>: \u201cDuring a record heatwave, no less. Fossil fuel industries have received $549 BILLION in direct subsidies, and $7 TRILLION in tax benefits. They average $30 billion per year in upfront taxpayer money. All of renewable energy recieved $400 million per year from 1994-2009.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/tennessee\">Tennessee<\/a>&nbsp;state Sen. Heidi Campbell (D-20) also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Campbell4TN\/status\/2072848315994042666\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called out<\/a>&nbsp;the move: \u201cTalk about \u2018slugs for salt\u2019\u2014it\u2019s 119 degree heat index in the Eastern US this week\u2014these guys are all in on the rapture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a July 4 post, scholar Juan Cole&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.juancole.com\/2026\/07\/heatings-spoiled-americas.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argued<\/a>&nbsp;that President Donald Trump\u2019s climate policies were tantamount to treason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince 2018, some 13,000 Americans have died from heat,\u201d he said. \u201cTrump\u2019s promotion of coal burning and cancellation of wind turbines make him the Benedict Arnold of America\u2019s current struggle, not its George Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cole pointed out that the current heatwave was part of a pattern of hotter summers in the nation\u2019s capital due to the climate emergency, noting that the last decade was its hottest on record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>The bad news is that this is only the beginning. Summers in the capital are going to be more dangerous every decade unless we halt dangerous carbon emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The average summer temperature in DC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainable.dc.gov\/climateready\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">could be 97\u00b0F in the 2080s<\/a>&nbsp;if we go on farting out CO2 at our current rate. Humidity will also increase, as the Atlantic heats up and puts more water vapor in the atmosphere. The ability of the atmosphere to hold water vapor increases 7% with every 1\u00b0C increase in temperature.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>That combined with more frequent storms and sea-level rise opens up the possiblity that DC \u201cwill be unlivable in the summers within the lifetime of my younger readers,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTrump is helping climate change accomplish what British military might could not, putting in question the future of America in places like Washington, DC and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/baltimore\">Baltimore<\/a>, at least in the summers,\u201d Cole said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
