With a key amendment to a 2027 spending bill expected to come up for a vote in the US House<\/a> of Representatives in the coming days, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries<\/a> had what one organizer called<\/a> \u201ca real opportunity… to show he\u2019s listening\u201d to the Democratic Party\u2019s base and its growing disapproval of US military<\/a> aid for Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But on Tuesday, progressive advocates said Jeffries (D-NY) had squandered that opportunity by announcing in a Dear Colleague letter that he would oppose the amendment put forward by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), which would eliminate the $3.3 billion the US provides to Israel\u2019s military annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last month, Rep.\u00a0Ro Khanna<\/a>\u00a0(D-Calif.)\u2014who was\u00a0detained<\/a>\u00a0by armed Israeli settlers in the\u00a0West Bank<\/a>\u00a0this week\u2014urged his colleagues to back the amendment, calling US support for Israel \u201cthe moral test of our time\u201d as he stood in front of a memorial for 20,000\u00a0children<\/a>\u00a0killed by the Israeli military in\u00a0Gaza<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
